Ql
We wish to design a stripping column to remove carbon dioxide from water. This is done by
heating the water and passing it countercurrent to a nitrogen stream in a staged stripper.
Operation is isothermal and isobaric at 60oC and I atm pressure. The water contains 9.2 x 104
mole fraction COz and flows at 100,000 lb/h. Nitrogen (N2) enters the column as pure nitrogen
and flows at 2500 ft3/h. Nitrogen is at I atm and 60oC. We desire an outlet water concentration
that is 2 x l0-7 mole fraction COz.Ignore nitrogen solubility in water and ignore the volatility of
the water. Equilibrium data are in below. Use a Murphree vapor efficiency of 40Yo. Find outlet
vapor composition and number of real stages needed
Henry's law constants, H for COz in water. H is in atm/mole fraction (ZS 'norks )

Q2
Ammonia gas is diffusing at a constant rate through a layer of stagnant air I mm
thick. Conditions are such that the gim contains 50% by volume ammonia at one
boundary of the stagnant layer. The ammonia diffirsing to the other boundary is
quickly absorbed, ffid the concentration is negligible at that plane. The temperature
is 295 K, and the atmospheric pressure and under these conditions the Oifnrsivity of
ammonia in air is 1.8105 m2ls. Estimate the rate of diffusion of ammonia through
the layer

In an apparatus for the absorption of SOz in water at one point in the column the
concentration of SOz in gas phase was l0oZ SOz by volume and was in contact with
a liquid containing 0.4%;o SOz by weight. Pressure and temperature are I atm and 323
K respectively. The overall gas phase mass transfer coefficient is 7.36 x l0-r0
kmoVm2s. (Nim). Of the total resistance 45Yo lies in gas phase and 55Yointhe liquid
phase. Equilibrium data:
