Projectile motion

1. A bomb falls down from a plane which is moving horizontally with a velocity of
7.2 /ℎ at a height of 1600 from the ground.

i. After what time period the bomb will strike the ground?
ii. At what distance horizontally will the bomb strike on ground in reference to
its releasing point?
iii. Find the angle the bomb will make with the horizontal of the ground?
2. As shown in the figure below, a projectile is fired horizontally with a speed of
from the top of a cliff high.
i. How far from the foot of the cliff will it strike?
ii. With what velocity will strike the ground?
iii. At which angle the velocity will strike the ground?

3. A World War II bomber flies horizontally over level terrain with a speed of 275 m/s
relative to the ground, at altitude of 3.00km. The bombardier releases one bomb.
a) How far does the bomb travel horizontally between its release and its impact on the
ground? Ignore the effects of air resistance.
b) The pilot maintains the plane’s original course, altitude, and speed through a storm of
flask. Where is the plane when the bomb hits the ground?
c) The bomb hits the target seen in the telescopic bombsight at the moment of the
bomb’s release. At what angle from the vertical was the bombsight set?
4. A baseball is thrown with an initial velocity of 100 /an angle of 30° above the
horizontal as shown in the figure 1 below. By neglecting the air resistance, find
the height in reference to the throwing point at which the baseball will reach after
8 of travel?

5. A basket ball player who is 2.0 tall is standing on the floor 10.0 from the basket as
shown below.
If he shoots the ball at 40.0° angle with the horizontal, with what initial speed must he
throw the ball. so that it goes through the hoop without striking the backboard? The
basket is 3.05 height.

6. At what initial speed must the basket-ball player in figure below, throw the ball, at angle
ϴ0=550 above the horizontal, to make the foul shot? The horizontal distances are d1=0.3m
and d2=4.3m, and the heights are h1=2.1m and h2=3.04m.

7. During the volcanic eruption, chunks of solid rock can be blasted out of the volcano;
these projectiles are called volcanic bombs. Figure below shows a cross section of Mt.
Fuji, in Japan.
a) At what initial speed would a bomb have to be ejected, at angle ϴ0=350 to the
horizontal, from the vent at A in order to fall at the foot of the volcano at B, at
vertical distance h=3.30 km and horizontal distance d=9.40 km? Ignore, for the
moment, the effect of air on the bomb’s travel.
b) What would be the time of flight?
8. In figure below, a stone is projected at a cliff of height h with an initial speed of 42.0 m/s
directed at angle ϴ0=600 above the horizontal. The stone strikes at A, 5.50 s after
launching. Find
a) The height h of the cliff,

b) The speed of the stone just before impact at A,

c) The maximum height H reached above the ground.

9. The figure below shows a pirate ship 560 m from a fort defending a harbor entrance. A
defense cannon, located at sea level, fires balls at initial speed v0=82 m/s.

a. At what angle ϴ0 from the horizontal must a ball be fired to the ship?

b. What is the maximum range of the cannonballs?

Circular motion

1. A disc of radius of 15 cm turns at a rate of 78 turns per minute.

Find:
a) The frequency of the rotation
b) The period
c) The angular velocity of the disc
2. A boy is playing by turning a stone attached on a rope whose length is 30 m, he reaches a
velocity of 3.76 m/s. Find:
a) The stone’s frequency
b) The angular velocity of the stone
3. A model car moves round a circular track of radius 0.3 m at 2 revolutions per second.
What is:
a) The angular speed ?
b) The period P?
c) The speed v of the car?
d) Find also the angular speed of the car if it moves with a uniform speed of 2m/s in a circle of
radius 0.4 m.
