Assignments: WHICH TEST?
…………………………………………………………………………………
Assignement one:
Choose the appropriate statistical test to address each of the
following research questions.
A. Paired sample t-test
B. Independent sample t-test
C. Mann-Whitney test
D. One sample t-test
E. One-way ANOVA
F. Wilcoxon Signed Rank test
G. Kruskal-Wallis test

A study was performed to find out whether subjects with acute chest pain have
abnormal systolic (normal = 120 mmHg) and/or diastolic (normal= 80 mmHg) blood
pressures. 500 subjects presenting themselves to an emergency physician were
enrolled.? (Note: Data are numeric and normally distribution)

Answer:…………………………………………………………………..

1. A study was performed to examine the effects of allergies on mood. One group of
participants were allergy-free; another group suffered from severe hay fever; a
third group suffered from eczema; and a fourth group had gluten intolerance. A
therapist rated the mood of each participant on a 100-point scale. Which statistical
test should the researchers use to see if allergies affect mood? (Note: Data are
numeric and NOT normally distribution)

Answer:…………………………………………………………………..

2. A study was performed to investigate the levels of stress for the three marital
status groups (married, single and divorced). (Note: Data are numeric and
normally distribution)

Answer:…………………………………………………………………..

3. In response to claims that A-levels are easier now than they were 20 years ago, a
group of current sixth-formers are given two English exams, one a copy of the
1980 A-level paper, and the other a copy of the 2005 A-level paper. Each student
provides a mark for each exam, out of 100. Their scores for the 1980 paper are
heavily skewed. Which statistical test should be used to test the hypothesis that
English exams used to be harder than they are nowadays? (Note: Data are
numeric and NOT normally distribution)

4. Suppose we are trying to investigate where is a difference in the mean cholesterol

level between those who underwent a calorie-controlled diet and who undertook
an exercise-training program. The sample was then randomly split into two
groups: Group 1 underwent a calorie-controlled diet (i.e., the 'diet' group) and
Group 2 undertook an exercise-training programme (i.e., the 'exercise' group). In
order to determine which treatment programme was more effective. (Note: Data
are numeric and NOT normally distribution)

Assignment two:

Perform the appropriate statistical test to address each of the

following research questions.
1. Using the research.sav data file find out whether smokers are
significantly affected than non-smokers. The variables you will need
are (smoke) and (tposaff).
2. Using the research.sav data file compare the self-esteem scores across
the three different age groups (18-29yrs, 30-44yrs, 45+yrs). The
variables you will need are (tslfest) and (agegp3).
3. Using the data file design.sav to compare fear of statistics scores for
males and females. The variables you will need are (fost3) and (sex).
4. Using the data file design.sav to assess whether there was a change in
students’ depression scores from time 1 (pre-intervention) to time 2
(post-intervention). The variables you will need are (depress1) and
(depress2).
5. Using the research.sav data to compare the levels of perceived stress
(tpstress) for the five different age groups (agegp5), 18-24yrs, 25-
32yrs, 33-40yrs, 41-49yrs and 50+yrs. The variables you will need are
(agegp5) and (tpstress).
6. Using the practical.sav data to investigate whether external stress
differs significantly before training and after 2 months of training) of a
group of people. The variables you will need are (exter_1) and
(exter_2).
