Gauge: 11 horizontal stitches and 11 vertical rows = 3 inche square. Please be sure to
check your gauge, the best yarn to use is Lilly Sugar & Cream, Peaches & Crème or any Red
Heart worsted weight. Caron Simply Soft can be used, but needs to be used doubled up
(crochet two strands at once).

Special Color Change Technique:

Finish round with sc to first ch, cut a 4 inch tail, add new color with a sc to secure, ch 1

nicely when the tails are crocheted over, just leave the tails and weave in with a yarn or

Round 32: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl to beginning ch

strands at a time for extra fullness…), sl st to last stitch worked, *ch 2, sc in next sc*
repeat from * to * around. Finish off fun fur and tuck in ends.

Tacking up Tricorns:

Tack up 3 ends of the hat. Tack 4 stitches first just before the Contrast Color Change
(Row 33) with black yarn, secure 5 stitches through the crown of the cap and the brim. I
start on the last stitch worked on row 33 and go over 2 stitches to the left, then back to the
center and two stitches on the right. You should now have the first side tacked up. Now,
“eye” the next two, With a sewing pin, tack up the other two sides the way you would
like them, then tack down 5 stitches on each side as you did with the first flap. Normally
the back flap is slightly wider than the front two. You can tack in several spots if you
would like.

Final tacking is done with Fun Fur: cut a 6 inch strand of fun fur and tie with a square
knot 5 stitches back (going through both sides that meet to form the point) on each point
(to create a sharper point), tuck in ends. Do this on every point of the hat.

Leaves:

Make 3: Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hk, in next st sc, in next st hdc, dc in next 3 st, ch 3, sl to
beginning ch. Ch 2, turn to work on opposite side of beg row, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next
ch, sc in next ch, sl in next ch, finish off, cut 10 inch tail. Weave in beginning yarn tail.
Attach leaves with 10 inch tail to blossom, finish off and cut ends flush to blossom.

Rose Clip:

Ch 3, sl st to form a loop. Ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, sl in loop (4x, you will have 4 beginning

petals). Row 2: (work IN BACK of petals just made) ch 2, sl in dc of first petal group,
*ch 2, sl in dc of next petal group (repeat * to* 3x, you will have 5 ch groups). Row 3:

Buccaneers & Pirates Hat ~ 4

*Ch3, 2 dc, ch 2, sl in same ch* in each ch group around (you will now have 9 petals
total ~ 4 in the first row and 5 in the 3rd row.). Row 4: (work IN BACK of petals just
made), *Ch 3, sl in 2nd dc of first petal group, *ch 3, sl in 2nd dc of next petal group*
(repeat *to* 4x, you will have 6 ch groups). Row 5: *Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2, sl in same ch* in
each ch group around (you will now have15 petals total ~ 4 in the first row, 5 in the 3rd
row and 6 in the 5th row.). Sl to base of 1st ch in this row and finish off. Make leaves as
above and sew onto back of rose(s).

**I usually put my flowers on French Barrettes or Pinch Clips so you can change out the
flowers, but you can also securely sew them to the hat (recommended for infants).

Hat Size Changes:

12 mos – 2T. Stop increasing at Round 7. Rounds 8-20: Ch1, sc in same st and every st
around, sl to first sc. Round 20 = Round 22. Follow pattern Rounds 23-30, changing to
contrasting color on Row 31-32. Rows 33-34 will be worked in Main Color, finish off
and follow Round 38.

Adult. Complete hat through Round 9. You are going to be creating row 9 ½ so to
speak! (This will actually be Round 10 for the adult hat). Ch1 , sc in same st and next 7
sts, 2 sc in nest st, *sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in nest st*, repeat from *to* around, sl to first sc
(70 sts). Go back to pattern and start on Round 10 and complete through end.

***Please watch young toddlers around the Fun Fur yarn, be sure they do not put it
in their mouth, sometimes the fur fluff will come off and can get into their
respiratory tract. That is why I did not size the pattern smaller than 12 mos***
