Coordination Chemistry

The branch of inorganic chemistry that deals with the study of

coordination compounds is known as coordination chemistry.
General Introduction of Salts

The compound which is formed by the neutralisation reaction of acid and base is
known as salt.

Simple salt :

Mixed salt :

Double salt :

Complex salt/coordination compounds :

Types of Salts

Simple salt :

● One +ve and One -ve Ion

● e. g., NaCl, KCl, Na2CO3 etc.

Mixed salt :

● more than one type of +ve ions or more than one type of -ve
ions or both the ions are more than one type.
● microcosmic salt NaNH4HPO4.4H2O, bleaching powder
Ca(OCl)Cl.
Addition Compounds

When two or more stable compounds are allowed to combine

together in stoichiometric properties these result in the formation of
crystalline substances called molecular of addition compounds.

1. KCI + MgCl2 + 6H2O KCI.MgCl2.6H2O

(Carnallite)
2. K2SO4 + Al2 (SO4)3 + 24H2) K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O
(Potash Alum)
3. (NH4)2SO4 + FeSO4 + 6H2O FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O
(Mohr’s salt)
4. CuSO4 + 4NH3 CuSO4.4NH3
(Tetraammine copper sulphate)
5. Fe(CN)2 + 4KCN Fe(CN) 2.4KCN
(Pot. ferrocyanide)
Addition Compounds

Addition Compounds

Double salts Coordination Compounds

Types of Salts

Double salt :

● one ion is common, either +ve ion or -ve ion in the two
Or more than two simple salts being mixed

● potash alum - K2SO4Al2(SO4)3 24H2O,mohr salt

- (NH4)2SO4 FeSO4 6H2O and carnallite -KCl MgCl2 6H2O.

K2SO4 + Al2(SO4)3 + 24H2O K2SO4 .Al2(SO4)3 . 24H2O ⇌ 2K+ (aq.) + 2Al+3 (aq.) + 4SO4 2- (aq.)
Types of Salts

Complex salt/coordination compounds :

● metal atom or ion is bonded by donating some electrons pairs

via coordinate bonds

Fe(CN)2 + 4KCN → Fe(CN)2 . 4KCN or K4 [Fe(CN)6] (aq.) ⇌ 4K+ (aq.) + [Fe(CN)6] (aq.)
Coordination Compounds Vs Double Salts

Double salt Responds test for the ions

1. Carnallite : KCl. MgCl2 6H2O 1. K+, Mg2+, Cl-

2. Potash alum : K2SO4 . Al2 (SO4 )3 24H2O 2. K+ , Al3+ ,SO42-

Complex compound Cation Anion

1. [Cu(NH3)4]SO4 1. [Cu(NH3)4]+2 1. SO42-

2. K2[PtF6] 2. 2K+ 2. [PtF6]2-

3. [Co(NH3)6][Cr(CN3)6] 3. [Co(NH3)62+ 3. [Cr(CN)6]3-

Coordination Compounds Vs Double Salts

Some common difference between double salts and complex

compounds are:

Double salt Complex compounds

1. The constituent simple salts are 1. The constituent simple salts may or
in equimolar proportions may not be in equimolar proportions

2. These dissociate in aqueous 2. The complex ion does not dissociate in

solution. aqueous solution.

3. These contain ionic bonds. 3. These may have ionic as well as

coordinate bonds.
