Adjectives
• An adjective is a word that limits or
describes a noun or pronoun.

• There are two major classes of


adjectives: descriptive and limiting
adjectives.
Descriptive Adjectives
• Describe the characteristics of a noun
or pronoun.

• It may be the color, size, or quality of


the noun or pronoun it modifies.
Types of Descriptive Adjectives
• Proper Adjective – formed from a proper noun.
• Philippine eagle
• Russian army

• Common Adjective – an adjective that expresses


ordinary qualities of a noun.
• Majestic mountain
• Multicolored flags

• Many participles may also be used as descriptive


adjectives.
• Broken arrow
• Untamed horses
Limiting Adjectives
• Either points out or denotes the
number of an object.

• It has three classes: articles, numerical


adjectives, and pronominal
adjectives.
• Articles
• The articles the, a, an indicate whether
the noun is used definitely or indefinitely.
• Numerical Adjectives
• Denote the exact number rank, or position
of a noun.
• Pronominal Adjectives
• May also be used as pronouns.
• There are five classes: demonstrative,
possessive, distributive, indefinite, and
interrogative.
Demonstrative Adjective
• Points out a definite person, place, or
thing.

Possessive Adjectives
• Denotes ownership of a noun.
• His
• My
• Our
• Their
• Your
• Her
• Its
Distributive Adjectives
• Refers to each person, place, or thing
separately.

• Each
• Every
• Either
• Neither
Indefinite Adjective
• Points out no particular person, place or thing.
• All
• Many
• Few
• Any
• Another
• Much
• Several
• Some
Interrogative Adjectives
• Used in asking questions.

• Who
• What
• When
• Where
• Which
Adverb
• An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another
adverb.

He will fervently pray for your success.

Paulo is too clever for a person.

The student answered the question impressively well.

• Adverb of Manner
• Enormously, greatly, easily,
endlessly, gloriously
• Adverb of Place
• Here, there, inside, outside, upstairs
• Adverb of Frequency
• Once, twice, often, seldom, rarely

• Adverb of Reason

• Before the subject of the sentence

• After the verb

• Between the helping verb and the
main verb
