b. Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Two: You have been studying tenses throughout this year. These tenses were
surveyed each by itself; however, sometimes you can come across sentences
where the writer shifts from one tense to another, a phenomenon called Tense
Shift. These shifts are sometimes justified (correct), yet in other occasions are
considered errors.

Watch the video uploaded on Moodle (Topic 10) and then write a one-page report

A/ Differences between past simple vs present perfect

the Present Perfect is used to indicate a link between the present

and the past .. The time of the action is before now but not
specified , and we are often more interested in the result than in
the action itself .

: The present perfect is used to describe

S + have/has + past participle + etc ..

.. S + haven't/hasn't + past participle + etc

An action or situation that started in the past and continues in -1

. the present

Example : I have lived in Britain since 1984 (and I still do)

. An action performed during a period that has not yet finished .2

Example : She has been to the cinema twice this week (and the
week isn't over yet)

A repeated action in an unspecified period between the past -3

. and now

. Example : We have visited Portugal several times

with an unfinished time word (this week..this month..today) -4

Example : i've seen John this week

But the past simple

.. S + verb (ed) + etc

.. S + didn't + verb + ect

Past simple is used to talk about a completed action in a time

before now .. duration is not important .. The time of the action
.can be in the recent past or the distant past

Example : I lived in Britain in 1989 (now i am in iraq)

Example : She went to the cinema twice last week (this week is
over)

You always use the past simple when you say when something
. happened so it is associated with certain past time expressions

. Example : william shakespear born in 1942

with a finished time word (last week..last month..yesterday)

.. Example : I saw John last week

. B/Differences between stative verb vs action verbs

There is an important difference between action verbs and state

verbs .. Action verbs can have both simple and continuous forms .
State verbs on the other hand do not normally have continuous
forms .. This is probably because continuous forms are mainly
used to talk about temporary situations .. States, on the other
. hand tend to be permanent or long lasting

Action verbs (or dynamic verbs) are verbs that describe actions
.. We can use them in the simple or continuous forms

. Example : Every day I walk home from class

I read mostly historical fiction .:Example

. Example : My father is helping me learn how to drive

. Example : Bob watches four hours of TV every night

Stative verbs (or state verbs) describe a status or quality of

something…not an action..Verbs of perception..opinion..the
senses..emotion..possession..and state of being are often stative
. verbs
. I’ve known my best friend since childhood

. We agree with you

. This book belongs to the teacher

. I hear some music playing

. The box was containing a pair of earrings

Action verbs refer to an action .. Examples are : write .. work ..

break .. kick .. cook .. take .. etc . State verbs or stative verbs refer
to a state , The most common state verbs are be and have .. They
are both primary auxiliaries .. The other primary auxiliary (do) is
. an action verb

Other common verbs referring to states are : know, believe, like,

love, hate, remember, suppose, understand, want, wish etc
