Just like in Mathematics

equals to four.
Yes, Ma’am.

Now class on our topic for today, which are

homo-words, these words may confuse us with
their structure and meanings, and these are
Homonyms, Homographs and Homophones.

First, let us define what a homonym is.

__________, will you please read the meaning of Homonym is two or more words having the same
homonym posted on the board? spelling or pronunciation but different meanings.

Going back to our activity earlier, let us examine

the first set of picture.
What do they have in common? Ma’am, they have similar names.
Yes, _______________?
Scale, Ma’am.
That’s right! And, what is that name?

So, both of them are called scale, but are they the No, Ma’am.
same?

Correct! It doesn’t mean that if they have the

same spelling, they are also of the same kind.
And that’s what homonym is.
They have the same spelling and the same
pronunciation but they differ in meaning
• Let’s play soccer after school.
Alright, let’s have another example. • The author wrote a new play.
Please read, ______________.

What do you think are the homonym words in

the given example? It’s the word play.

__________? Homographs are words that are spelled alike but
differ in meaning and pronunciation.

Class, what do you think is the difference

between homonyms and homograph?
Yes, ___________? Ma’am, in homonyms they both have the same
spelling and pronunciation but in homograph
they only have the same spelling, they don’t have
the same pronunciation and meaning.

Correct! Let us look again at the second set of

picture on the previous activity. As we can see
here, they are different pictures but again they
have something in common, and what is it?
Yes, _________? Ma’am, they have the same name, and that is
record.

Alright, so record on the first picture is REcord

and the second one is reCORD. What did you Ma’am, they differ in pronunciation.
observe?

Very good! Let’s have an example.

• I don’t know if I will live or die.
Please read, __________. • Last night I saw the band play live in
concert.
So, here in this example, what do you think are
the homographic words? Ma’am, the words lIve and LaIve.

Yes, ____________?

Very good, so the first homographic word is

pronounced as LIve and the second one is
pronounced as LaIve. Then, what is the meaning Ma’am, it means having a life.
of LIve in the first sentence?

That’s great! How about the second one which is Ma’am, it is a real time or actual performance.
LaIve?

Very good! once again, what did you observe

with the given examples? The words are similar in spelling, but they differ
Yes, _______? in pronunciation and meaning.

Excellent! So that is homograph

Let us now proceed to the last homo-word which

is homophone. First, let us define what Homophone is one of two or more words that are
homophone is. Please read the meaning posted pronounced alike but different in meaning, origin
on the board, __________. or spelling.

understand homophone. Take a look again at the
last set of picture. Let us identify what are the
given pictures. Waste, Ma’am.
What do we call the first picture?
Yes, _______________?
Waist, Ma’am.
Very good! How about the second one?

spelling of both words? words.)
Yes, _______________?

That’s great!

Yes, _____________? pronounced them, but they are different in
spelling and meaning.

Excellent!

Can someone differentiate homonyms, Ma’am, Homonyms are words with similar
homographs and homophones? spelling and sounds but different in meaning,
homographs on the other hand, are spelled
similarly but are pronounced differently and
technically have different meanings. While
homophones are pronounced alike but are
