3. A 440V, 50Hz, 1470 rpm, 4 pole, Y connected wound-rotor induction motor has the following
parameters per phase referred to the stator: Rs=0.2 Ohm, Xs=0.5 Ohm, Xm=20 Ohm, Rr’=0.1 Ohm,
Xr’=0.8 Ohm. The motor is controlled by a slip energy recovery scheme. The drive is designed for a speed
range of 100% to 50% of synchronous speed. The maximum value of firing angle for the thyristor
converter is 170 degrees and the resistance of the filter inductor is negligible. Ignoring friction and
windage losses, (a) calculate the turns ratio of the transformer intervening between the thyristor
converter on the rotor side and 3-phase supply (b) Calculate the torque and supply side power factor at
a firing angle of 120 degrees and a speed of 1025 rpm. (c) Calculate the torque and supply side power
factor at a firing angle of 100 degrees and a speed of 1125 rpm.

5. A 3 hp, 120V, 1500 rpm, separately excited DC motor having Ra=0.8 Ohm,La=0.003 H and a back emf
constant = 0.764 V.sec/rad is controlled by a chopper operating at a switching frequency of 500Hz. The
supply to the chopper circuit is a 180V DC. The motor is considered for a 300 rpm application where the
torque pulations should be within 2%. (i) Evaluate its suitability for this application by showing proper
calculations (ii) If it is not found suitable, then what should be the chopping frequency that will bring the
torque pulsation within the specifications?
