INTRODUCTION
• The project involves 3D modelling of a quartz clock, with all its
components.
• The model shows various parts of the mechanism, which can be used
to understand and simulate the working of the same.
• An actual clock, and a clock movement is used as a reference for
dimensions and the shape.
• A motion study is carried out, which demonstrates the role of each
part in the clockworks.
• Different views of the clock, its working, assembly, and cross sections
are presented.

METHODLOGY
• The procedure undertaken till measurement of parts and preparation of rough
drawings were as discussed in the interim presentation.
• The drawings and measurements were used as the reference to create each part
of the CAD model.
• Bottom up, followed by Top down assembly method were employed.
• After necessary edits, the parts were assembled. First, the clock movement, which
then was used as a subassembly for assembling the clock.
• Material colors and texturing was used for realistic effect.
• Wrapped texture was used for the battery and dial.
• Kinematic simulation was carried out after providing necessary gear mates. The
magnet wheel was designated as the “Rotary Motor”, with angular velocity 30
RPM (CW). This drives the other gears, which is studied.
• The various views are obtained, along with a video of the motion simulation.
• For high quality, photorealistic rendering, the inbuilt functionality of SW,
“PhotoView 360” was utilized.

WORKING OF THE CLOCK
• The Kinematic study carried out is a good demonstration of the working
principles of a quartz clock.
• A clock basically works like a stepper motor with a step size which translates
to the motion of seconds hand every one second, by 6°, or a complete
revolution every minute.
• A quarts crystal is shaped like a tuning fork. This, when exited by a power
source, oscillates at 32768 Hz, which is recorded by the electronic circuitry.
• After the said number of oscillations, power is sent to the electromagnetic
coil, which magnetizes its core.
• A magnet attached to the magnet wheel is thus set in motion by a specific
amount (angular), and the pinion drives the rest of the gear train.
• This motion, by the gear train, translates to one complete revolution of the
seconds hand every minute, minute hand every hour, and hours hand every
12 hours, indicated on a dial.
• The functioning of the gear train is better understood by the kinematic
simulation presented.
KINEMATIC SIMULATION
• The model was kinematically simulated in Solidworks.
• After applying the necessary gear mates, a “RotaryMotor” was added
with 30 RPM angular velocity, and motion was calculated.
• It was then animated to demonstrate the working of a clock.
• The same was made into a video, cut and stitched together.
• It was voiced over (narrated), to explain the working.
• A video can be a good tool in explaining graphically how something
works.
• Visualization before production, and presenting the same to the
consumer is one of the most important job of a CAD software.
