INTRODUCTION
This portfolio is to compile the reading assessments of our histology laboratory which is the
Endocrine system and the Digestive system. On this portfolio I will also put my conclusion of
the two body systems.

OBJECTIVE

 To be able to discuss the importance of Endocrine system

 To be able to discuss the importance of the Digestive system
 To be able to discuss some complications of the Endocrine system and the Digestive
system
 To be able to give my reflections about these two reading assessments

READING ASSIGNMENT

 ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
 DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

SCORES
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

The endocrine system is made up of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid

glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries (in females) and testicles (in males). Endocrine system
is the one responsible for the emotions, hormones, metabolism, sexual function, tissue function
and etc. The endocrine system affects almost every organ and cell in the body.

In maintaining your Endocrine system healthy is you must, get plenty of exercise, have a
healthy diet, go for regular medical checkups, talk to the doctor before taking any supplements or
herbal treatments, let the doctor know about any family history of endocrine problems, such
as diabetes or thyroid problems.

Hormone levels that are too high or too low indicate a problem with the endocrine
system. Hormone diseases also occur if your body does not respond to hormones in the
appropriate ways. Stress, infection and changes in the blood's fluid and electrolyte balance can
also influence hormone levels, the most common disease associated to endocrine system is the
diabetes, a condition in which the body does not properly regulates simple sugar.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the digestive system begins at the mouth,
includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (also known as the colon) and
rectum, and ends at the anus. The entire Digestive system begins from the mouth to the anus.
In keeping the Digestive system healthy is by having a high fiber diet, eating insoluble
and soluble fiber, limit in eating high fat foods and etc.
Digestion begins with the mouth. Even the smell of food can generate saliva, which is
secreted by the salivary glands in the mouth, contains an enzyme, salivary amylase, which breaks
down starch. Teeth, which are part of the skeletal system, play a key role in digestion. In
carnivores, teeth are designed for killing and breaking down meat. Herbivores’ teeth are made
for grinding plants and other food to ease them through the digestion process.
In keeping the Digestive system healthy is by having a high fiber diet, eating insoluble
and soluble fiber, limit in eating high fat foods and etc.
A digestive disease is any health problem that occurs in the digestive tract. Conditions
may range from mild to serious. Some common problems include cancer, irritable bowel
syndrome, and lactose intolerance.
CONCLUSION
I learned on the Endocrine system is, it is the one responsible in selecting and removing
materials from the blood, processes them and secretes the finished chemical product for use
somewhere in the body. The thyroid is the one secrets a range of hormones that can affect the
whole body. Thyroid hormones impact a host of vital body functions, including heart rate, skin
maintenance, growth, temperature regulation, fertility and digestion. Which means that the
thyroid of the endocrine system is the master metabolic center of the body.
I learned that the endocrine system plays a huge role on the human body, because it works as a
messaging network within the body and regulates many important functions, including your
emotional state, physical development, reproductive function, and metabolism. That’s why when
a person is emotionally unstable we should think that there is a problem on his or her Endocrine
system.
On the Digestive system, what I learned is it is the one responsible of what substances that are
entering our stomach and where the food enters. Digestion is the process by which our food is
broken down into a form that can be absorbed into the blood system and carried to cells
throughout the body to provide nourishment and energy. We have to maintain healthy digestive
system so that we can eat properly, and to maintain our weight, because when we have unhealthy
digestive system we can encounter loss of appetite which can lead to loss of weight.
The inability to digest food properly could indicate a deficiency of stomach acid and digestive
enzymes. This is a common problem due to poor eating habits and high stress levels. If there is a
deficiency in digestive enzymes your body will pull enzymes into the digestive organs from
other parts of your body, which are critical for proper immune regulation and cellular processes.
This could lead to a depletion of enzymes in other systems and processes not directly related to
digestion.
