GRAMMAR
Today we talked about the Arabic definite article: ال- al - the. If we look at the example اﻟﻜﺘﺎب-
al-kitaab - the book, we see that الlet's us know we're talking about a specific book, as
opposed to an unspecified book ٌ ﻛﺘﺎب- kitaab - a book. If you were going to use "the" to
express yourself in English, then you are most likely going to use الin Arabic. . اﻟﺮﺟﻞ ﻗﺼﻴﺮ- ar-
rajul qaSiir. - The man is short. The definite article الis also used in ways that "the" is not
used in English. In the next example we see that الis attached to the adjective of a definite
noun. Notice that this example is no longer a complete sentence, but just a noun phrase.
اﻟﺮﺟﻞ اﻟﻘﺼﻴﺮ- ar-rajul al-qaSiir - the short man To make adjectives out of the demonstrative
pronouns ( ﻫﺬه, ﻫﺬا- haadha, haadhihi - this) the definite article الis added to the noun.
Compare the following examples: . ﻫﺬه ﻃﺎوﻟﺔ ﻗﺼﻴﺮة- haadhihi Taawila qaSiira. - This is a short
table. . ﻫﺪه اﻟﻄﺎوﻟﺔ ﻗﺼﻴﺮة- haadhihi aT-Taawila qaSiira. - This table is short. The pronunciation of
الdepends on the sound following it. If the next letter is pronounced using the tip of the
tongue, then the 'l' sound is replaced by that letter. Here is a list of all the letters that assimilate
the 'l' sound in ال. (Note: These are called اﻟﺤﺮوف اﻟﺸﻤﺴﻴﺔ- al-Huruuf ash-shamsiya - the sun
letters.) ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل نExamples اﻟﺮﺟﻞ- ar-rajul - the man اﻟﻄﺎوﻟﺔ- aT-Taawila -
the table اﻟﺸﻤﺲ- ash-shams - the sun The rest of the letters in the Arabic alphabet are known
as اﻟﺤﺮوف اﻟﻘﻤﺮﻳﺔ- al-Huruuf al-qamariya (the moon letters) and don't use the tip of the tongue,
so the 'l' sound is pronounced. أ ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م ه و يExamples: اﻟﻜﺘﺎب- al-kitaab - the book
