0. Two former Tibetan monks have set themselves on fire in western China, in the
latest of several self-inmolation protests against Chinese rule, activists have said.
One of them, burned himself to death in a hotel room last Friday. On the same day,
a 22-year-old set himself on fire at a crossroads, suffering serious burns. d

1. Changes to the law permitting television cameras to film the sentencing of criminals
are expected to be included in the Queen’s speech in May. In its initial phase,
cameras would be allowed to film the judge’s summing up and sentencing remarks
in the court of appeal.
2. Packets of cigarettes disappeared from the shelves of supermarkets in England last
week and must stay hidden in closed cupboards. New legislation, aimed at reducing
the temptation to smoke for children and young people will require large shops and
supermarkets to retire displays at the point of sale.
3. Amazon.co.uk. Britain’s biggest online retailer, generated sales of more than $5.2bn
last year but paid no corporation tax on that income, and is under investigation by
the UK tax authorities. The tax inquiry into the UK operation focuses on a period
when ownership of the business was transferred to a Luxembourg company.
4. A Hong Kong man was sentenced to community service last month after threatening
to set himself on fire in protest at his son’s failure to get a place at an English-
medium school. The 53-year-old apologised for his actions, but he said he had no
other way to draw attention to his case after the government cut the number of
classes at 200 secondary schools.
5. A further 7,000 women may be victims of the PIP breast implant scandal after tests
show that substandard silicone was used to fill the implants for much longer than
had been thought. The Health Secretary said that women who were given implants
made by the French company Poly Implant Prothese before 2001 may also want to
see their GP.
6. The wettest April on record brought some relief to wildlife in England and Wales
suffering the worst drought in over the three decades. But while reproducing fish and
frogs have benefited as river flows return largely to normal, in some parts of the
country hundreds of bird nests have been drowned by floods.
