Assignment # 4

1. A wooden column of square section is loaded along its axis with

a) a load of 150 kN with both ends pivoted

b) a load of 200 kN with both ends fixed and
c) a load of 175 kN with one end fixed and other pivoted.

The permissible compressive stress of wood is 12 MPa and its modulus of elasticity is 12.5 GPa.
Using a factor of safety of 2.5 calculate the size of cross-section of the column in each case, if
length of the column is 2 m.

2. A vertical 5 m high column used in the structure of a building is made from an I-section steel
beam rigidly built-in to the foundations at its lower end. The I-section is of overall depth 252 mm
and breadth 203 mm, flange thickness 13.5 mm and web thickness 8 mm. The maximum
allowable compressive stress in the steel is 150 MN/m2 and the minimum safety factor on axial
force against failure by buckling is 2. Find the maximum weight the column can support if (i) it
is effectively free of constraint at its upper end, and (ii) it is rigidly built-in at this end, with no
lateral deflection allowed.

3. Check whether the function = is a possible warping function for solving torsion
problem of prismatic bar using St. Venant’s method. If so, find

a) shape of the cross section corresponding to the above function

b) angle of twist per unit length on applying a torque T
c) stress components and resultant stress
d) maximum stress and its location

4. Find the angle of twist per unit length and the maximum shear stress set up when the two cell
tubular section, as shown in the figure is subjected to a torque of 25 kNm. The section is
constructed from an alloy with a modulus of rigidity, G = 165 GN / m2
5. A cantilever of length 1.5 m and of the cross-section shown in the figure below carries a
vertical load of 15 kN at its outer end, the line of action being parallel with the longer leg and
arranged to pass through the shear centre of the section. Find the stress set up in the section at
points A, B and C, given that the centroid is located as shown. Determine also the angle of
inclination of the N. A.
