security. The Manager approves Users

 USERS (1-N)
Users who perform site specific tasks on the data center site and are governed by role-based

Subscriptions and Licensing

The NetZoom Pro subscription and licensing model works as follows:

 Each single subscription number is valid for a predetermined number of users, either 1, 3, 5,
10, 15, or 20. The number is be shared between Users.

 Each single user subscription number is valid for a 50 Racks. Adding additional user
subscription numbers increases this Rack count by 50 for each additional user. The number
of allowed Racks is shared between all active Users.

 When a subscription number is activated by the Manager, the Manager has complete access
to the data center site and all NetZoom Pro features. The Manager is not restricted by role-
based security.

 When a subscription number is activated by a User, the User has restricted access to the data
center site and NetZoom Pro features. A User is restricted by role-based security on the data
center site.

 Each time the Manager or a User is removed, the subscription number is released and is
available for use by another Manager or User as long it is not expired.

 When a subscription number expires, access to the data center site and NetZoom Pro
features are disabled for that User or Manager until a non-expired subscription number is
activated for that User or Manager.

 When ordering subscription numbers, determine the count of people acting as the Manager
and Users and your Rack count. This will help you decide how many 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20 user
licenses must be ordered.

 A SaaS licensing model is available. Please contact our Sales department by phone at 630.281.6464
(8:30 AM – 5:30 PM Mon – Fri US CST) or e-mail us at Sales@NetZoom.com for more details.

CHAPTER 5 – Modeling a Data Center Site

This chapter will help you in understanding some of the tools and methods that NetZoom Pro offers
for assisting in modeling a data center site.

T
o effectively model a data center you’ll need to have an understanding of the tools and methods
available to assist you in organizing and managing the construction of a data center.

This chapter covers ways to design your hierarchy, how to add devices to a rack though
dragging and dropping, management of decommissioned equipment, and Explorer.

45
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E

5.1 Visualize your Data Center Site

Modeling a data center requires planning and forethought, the old adage of “fail to plan, plan to fail”
holds true with the newest of solutions. Just as your data center did not come together in one day,
neither will your DCIM implementation. Planning ahead is essential.

Planning out your Data Center Site Location Hierarchy lets users have a clear idea of how to Model
their site during the rest of implementation.

One Site or Many? – Each NetZoom Pro installation supports one site; a site is a logical
separation of data center locations. The level of separation is up to you, it may be that each
physical data center in your enterprise receives its own site, it may be that each State, or
region instead has its own site in which multiple data centers are supported on the same site.
Some guiding items to consider:

 In how many locations are you implementing your DCIM solution?

 How big is each location?
 Is there common staff for all data centers in an Area?

Note

As you expand, keep in mind that you can always upgrade to NetZoomDC, our Enterprise level DCIM.
NetZoomDC supports multiple sites.

46

5.2 Explorer
NetZoom Pro allows you to model, manage, monitor, and maximize your data center potential.

With NetZoom Pro, you can manage your data center site with no limits to the number of locations,
racks or assets you wish to manage. Racks can be configured using rack mountable equipment, and
you may also have floor equipment. NetZoom Pro lets you manage both facility infrastructure and
IT infrastructure.

Data centers are made of hundreds and thousands of devices, racks, and other equipment. You can
easily organize the physical infrastructure of your data center and the entire inventory of hardware
within Explorer which is represented as a hierarchical tree.

Explorer allows you to manage your data center site as a logical topology representing entities such
as locations, racks, equipment, ports, plugs, and slots as nodes. These entities serve as building
blocks for creating your data center and allow you to organize your data center in a simple or
complex fashion.

A data center site will only display equipment and properties that a user has access to, based on the
access permissions assigned to their roles or their assigned tenants and filters. You can choose to
view your data center’s IT infrastructure or Facility infrastructure by checking on unchecking the
options on top of Explorer.

47
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E

There are several entities in NetZoom Pro:

 DataCenter – Represents the data center site being managed. It also serves as the single
root node for the data center within which the data center is managed.

 Location – Represents physical location or a logical division within a data center.

Example: Floor, Room, Row, Pod, Zone, etc. Locations can be nested within other
locations. They are used to organize the data center and represent the data center topology.

 Rack – A cabinet where equipment can be mounted for ease of management. Racks can
be configured or populated with devices, servers, PDUs and patch panels. Data centers are
usually comprised of multiple racks.

 Device – Any type of equipment: rack mountable equipment, floor equipment,

configurable equipment, non-configurable equipment, chassis, card or module. It does not
include servers, patch panels and PDUs.

 Server – Combination of hardware and software designed to provide services to clients.

When used alone, it represents a computer running a server operating system.

 Patch Panel – Panel that houses cable connections

 PDU – Equipment that distributes electric power. Usually power distribution units and
they contain power ports.

 RU and Slot – Represents a rack unit or a chassis slot where other equipment can be
placed.

 Data Port – Port on an equipment used to make data connections

 Power Port – Port on an equipment used to make power connections

 In Out Plug – Point on an equipment where another equipment can be externally

attached. They are usually found on rack exteriors or on shelves.

 Cooling – Equipment that is for cooling the data center.

 Cable – Wire that connects ports

48
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E

Explorer also comes with other special nodes meant for specific purposes. These nodes cannot be
renamed or removed except the Unused nodes. These nodes are common to all users.

 Unused Devices - The Unused Devices node collectivity displays references to all the
equipment removed in the entire data center from each individual unused bin. Equipment
here can only be expanded up till their shape views so you may view their data and preview
their images.

 Unused – The Unused node collects the removed equipment from respective locations in
the data center. Equipment here can only be expanded up till their shape views so you may
view their data and preview their images.

 My Staging Area – Available in Site Mode to allow you to freely design, model, and create
parts of your data center before committing it to a live site. It can be used just like the Site
node. Data center and rack import can only be performed in the Staging Area. Planning and
change management cannot be performed within the Staging Area; therefore the changes
made in Staging Area are not logged. They do not require approval either since the contents
of the staging are not part of your live site. To make them part of your live site, you must
move them to the live data center site above. Any moves to the live data center will be
logged in the Maintenance Log. The nodes in the ‘My Staging Area’ are separate for each
individual user on each data center site. The Manager will see the combined ‘My Staging
Area’ of all users.

 Task Queue Status – This icon will display the count of active tasks such as; imports,
recalculate, discovery, monitoring, etc. Clicking on this icon opens the detailed log.

 Multi-Select – This icon located at the top of the Explorer Pane will enable and disable
the multi-select feature for use with Watermarks.

5.3 Manual Data Center Location Creation

There are two ways of implementing a data center location hierarchy. One is by manually adding
data center locations directly within the application, this topic is covered here. The other is utilizing
an import spreadsheet which is covered in Chapter 9 – Import and Export Using Microsoft Excel.

If your hierarchy is simple or small, manual locations are a quick and easy to create. You can
manually create your data center location hierarchy either in the Staging Area, or directly in the Live
Site.

In the Staging Area

The Staging Area is a node in Explorer which allows you to freely design, model, and create parts of
your data center before committing it to a live site. The Staging Area is also the only place that data
center and rack imports can be performed.

Note: The Staging Area node cannot be renamed or removed.

Planning and change management cannot be performed within the Staging Area; therefore, the
changes made in Staging Area are not logged. They do not require approval either since the contents
of the staging are not a part of your live site. To make them a part of your live site, you must move
them to the live data center site above. Any moves to the live data center will be logged in the
Maintenance Log.

5.5 Unused Devices

Devices are constantly added and removed from data centers. To help manage devices you’ve
removed that may be end of life, or may simply be waiting to be re-used again in the future we’ve
created the unused bins.
Unused and Unused Devices are nodes in Explorer which collect any unused racks or equipment
that are removed from your live data center site. The Unused node collects the removed equipment
from respective locations in the data center. The Unused Devices node collectivity displays all of the
equipment removed in the entire data center. Since the data center is common to all users, so are the
Unused Devices and Unused nodes.

Equipment in these nodes can only be expanded up to their shape views so that you may view their
data and preview their images. These nodes cannot be renamed. The Unused nodes can be removed
however the Unused Devices node cannot be removed.

1. Click the Home tab. You must be in Site Mode to use Unused devices.

2. Any removed racks, equipment or contents of removed locations will be placed in

respective Unused nodes with a reference to it in the Unused Devices node.

3. Equipment from the Unused nodes can be placed back in the data center for re-use.

4. You may also dismantle a deleted rack to preserve its rack mounted equipment. You may
do this before removing a rack permanently. To dismantle a rack, right-click on it and
click Dismantle. All the rack mounted equipment will be placed individually in the
Unused bin.

5. To remove a rack or equipment permanently from the Unused node, right-click on the

6.1 Introduction to Equipment Shapes and Stencils

NetZoom Pro equipment shapes and stencils are not just pretty pictures, but also extremely intelligent.
NetZoom Pro shapes and stencils distinguish themselves from ordinary images and stencils.

First a bit of clarification on terminology that you’ll frequently be seeing in this chapter;

Microsoft defines a Visio shape as: “Anything is a shape in Visio, including pictures and text”

Microsoft defines a Visio stencil as: “A stencil is a collection of shapes”

NetZoom Pro equipment shapes and stencils are:

 Accompanied with embedded detailed data such as manufacturer, physical dimensions,

energy requirements, port properties, and other properties provided by manufacturers.

 Exceptionally detailed, accurate, true to life, colored graphic representations of their real life
counterparts.

 Scalable vector graphics, which can be scaled to any size without loss of resolution.

 Created with multiple views.

 Contain equipment slots, data ports, and power ports to match manufacturer specifications.

 Come with built-in active connection points that correspond to equipment ports and slots,
which allow mounting and port-level connectivity.

 Accompanied with customizable labels.

7.1 Introduction to the Configurator

Using configured shapes, you can re-create equipment within NetZoom Pro that reflects the same
configuration as the equipment in your real data center. Saving configured shapes in the
Configurator allows you to save time later by reducing the amount of time and effort required to
search for shapes and repeatedly customize them in your data centers. You can quickly and easily
access the configured equipment directly from the Configurator.

The Configurator comes with three categories. Each category can contain multiple sets where you
can place and share configured racks and equipment.

 My Devices - Accessible only to you. My devices is often used as a “favorite” shapes

set, or as a staging area to configure shapes to add to the Enterprise Device list.

 Site Devices - Accessible to everyone working on the current data center site.

CHAPTER 9 – Import and Export Using

Microsoft Excel
This chapter will help you import your data center hierarchy and rack elevations from Microsoft Excel
spreadsheets and export data center information to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

I
mport is the preferred way of entering devices into NetZoom Pro, it is the simplest and fastest
way to configure and create your Locations, Racks, Servers, Chassis, Cards and Modules and
quickly add them to NetZoom Pro.

Along with the equipment you’re adding to NetZoom Pro you can also supply properties with that
equipment as well. This section will show you how to prepare and import your spread sheets, and
export data from the application to Excel.

9.1 Creating a Location Import Sheet

Good planning and accurate layout is critical for a successful import, this section will teach you how
to create a physical layout import.

1. Rename the first worksheet to the highest level location in your data center. (in the above
example Floor 10 is the highest location, Room A is in Floor 10 and Row 1-6 are in Room A)

2. Data center infrastructure can be divided into multiple location levels. Create columns
(maximum ten) to represent each location level as LocLevel1, LocLevel2, LocLevel3, and so on.

3. Use the first row in each worksheet to enter column headings. LocLevel1 and LocLevel2 are
required.

4. Create the rest of the columns to match any properties you wish to import for the locations. The
column headings must match the property name of the property in NetZoom Pro, so the
property values can be automatically imported (In the above example PowerThreshold and
HeatThreshold values will be imported for the locations because these properties already exist in
NetZoom Pro and the column headers match the property name).

5. Document your data center infrastructure under each location level in a hierarchical manner.
Each row represents a location or sub-location. Sub-locations will be defined along with their
path (in the above example Room A is a sub location of Floor 10, and Row 1 is a sub location of
Room A making this hierarchy 3 levels deep).

6. You can use the columns Xpos , Ypos, Xtiles, Ytiles to position the location on the site floor
map. These settings are optional for import, however required for the Site Preview to display
properly. To learn more, refer to Section 13.5 – How to Customize Site Layout Previews.

7. If you provide address or longitude and latitude information for locations, connections made
between different locations will be displayed on the Location Map previews.

9.3 Creating a Device Import Sheet

Importing your racks and devices from Excel into NetZoom Pro is the fastest and most accurate way of
creating your data center. This section will show you how to layout your Device Import Spreadsheet.

1. Create and rename following worksheets to correspond to each location in your data center. (e.g.
Equipment for Row 1 should go into a tab named Row 1)

2. Create the following columns in each worksheet. These columns are required and must contain
values for each entry. You may create any additional columns you wish

 EQID – Identifies the equipment in the NetZoom Pro library. Make sure the EQID is
accurate and exists in the NetZoom Pro library.

 DeviceLabel – Provides a user-friendly display name for the equipment. By default, the
product number will be used as the eLabel.

 NodeType – Determines how the equipment will be mounted. If this value is not
provided, all equipment will be placed on the floor. To learn about the node type codes
and their definitions, refer to Appendix 5 - Node Type Codes for Import.

 Position – Determines where to place the equipment in the rack, or the card/module in
the chassis. If a value is not provided, equipment will be automatically mounted based on
the settings provided during import.

 AssetID – Used to uniquely identify the equipment when making Connectivity imports.
It is recommended that at least the Racks be given an Asset ID.

93
I M P O R T A N D E X P O R T U S I N G M I C R O S O F T E X C E L

3. You may choose to create the following columns to take advantage of certain features:

 Xpos, Ypos, Xtiles, Ytiles, and Angle - Allows you to position the Racks and Floor
devices on the site floor map. These settings are optional for import, however required
for the Site Preview to display properly. To learn more, refer to Section 13.5 – How to
Customize Site Layout Previews.

 RowNumber and ColNumber – Allows you to map the floor equipment or rack with a
placeholder on the layout template to generate accurate floor layouts. The following
values (-1, 0, [blank]) mean the position will be automatically determined by NetZoom
Pro.
These settings are optional for import, however required for the Location Previews &
Physical Layouts to display properly. To learn more, refer to Section 13.4 – How to
Customize Location Layouts and Templates.

 Tenant – Used to assign a Tenant during import. Do not give a Rack a Tenant value
and Tenants must be imported first.

 SetName – Allows you to select the equipment from a set in ‘Site Devices’ within the
Configurator. In this case, SetName must correspond to the name of the set and eLabel
must correspond to the equipment name in the set. The matching configured equipment
will be selected directly from the Configurator instead of the NetZoom Pro library. You
must also provide the EQID.

4. Create the rest of the columns for any additional properties you wish to import. The column
headings must match the property names in NetZoom Pro, so the property values can be
automatically imported.

5. Enter a row entry for each piece of floor equipment and rack along with values for each column
(as pictured in the example Rack R3.01 is listed at the top of the sheet highlighted in yellow).

6. For each rack, list all of the rack mountable equipment directly under the rack entry along with
values for each column (as pictured in the example all of the devices that belong in R3.01 are
listed under it).

7. For each piece of equipment, list all the configured cards and modules directly under the
equipment entry along with values for each column.

8. Once you are done, you may modify your spreadsheet by inserting additional locations,
equipment, or properties. You may also create new worksheets or tables for each location as
well.

9. Save and close the spreadsheet.

11.3 Import Connections

The fastest way to make a large amount of connections is importing from an Excel spreadsheet. This
section will show you how to create connectivity import sheets and show you how to import that data
into NetZoom Pro.

Introduction to connectivity import

In order to import your connections you’ll need to have first imported, configured and verified all of
the devices in your Device Import so that you have ports available and ready to make connections.

You’ll also need to ensure that any rack where you’ll be importing connections to has an Asset ID. If
your organization doesn’t use AssetID’s you’ll need to fill in some unique value for each rack to act
as a stand in (Some users have used Serial Numbers as a stand in for Asset ID).

1. FromAsset – This is the first string of the connection, the formula is: AssetID~ F or R based
on what side of the rack that you’re making the connection on ~ RU#X This is the RU that the
device starts at, which is the lowest RU that it fills.

Example: AssetID~F~RU#7

For some devices the string can stop at the rack unit if that’s where the port in question resides.
However, for some devices the port will be inside of a card or module; in NetZoom Pro those
are referred to as Slots. You’ll need to refer to the device in question to check if it has slots and
how many slots it may have. Some devices with modular ports may have several levels of Slots
before the port itself.

For Devices with slots a connectivity string can appear much longer:
AssetID~(F/R)~RU#X~Slot#Y~Slot#Z

Example: AssetID~F~RU#7~Slot#1~Slot#2

2. FromPort – This is the port name that your making your connection to, it should appear exactly
as it does in NetZoom, typically that means the type of port that it is along with a port number,
such as in our example of RJ45#1.

3. ToAsset – This is the same as FromAsset but for the destination port.

4. ToPort – This is the same as FromPort but for the destination port.

5. Cable – The type of cable used, this will correspond to an existing cable in your cable list

8. Each placeholder and text label comes with pre-defined properties. You can provide properties
to each placeholder and text label for display or for use in data graphics. When defining
properties, make sure the Label and Prompt match the property name as defined in NetZoom
Pro.

9. For each placeholder and text label, define the row number and column number property.

10. For each text label, define a property ‘NodeProperty’. This property allows you to display a
variety of data on the text label. For each property you wish to show in the text block must be in
entered in this format _Node_[PropertyName] within the Value field.
Example, to display the label of an item, enter ‘_Node_eLabel’.
The tilde (~) corresponds to a line break between each property you enter. To provide static
text, provide a | (bar) with the static text within angular brackets < >.
Example: “_Node_eLabel~_Node_AssetID~“ or “_Node_eLabel|<LAYOUT>”.
Make sure the property names you enter match exactly with the property names provided in
NetZoom Pro. This is useful for creating text labels for placeholders or creating a title for the
floor layout.
In case of a dynamic title label, make sure the row and column number values are -1.

Note

The Row Number and Col Number properties are importable. See Chapter 9 – Import and Export Using

to correspond to each rack or floor equipment in a location. To provide generic placement for
each rack or floor equipment, provide -1 for row and column number values for the
placeholders and text labels. Providing specific row and column numbers ensures precise
placement for the racks and floor equipment on your floor plan along with appropriate data. If
you provide specific row and column values, they must be unique in the template. Duplicate row
and column combinations will cause errors while generating the diagram.

13. You can also provide data graphics for placeholders using the properties you defined for
placeholders.

14. Save the template and re-import the template with a new name after modifying it.

12. Modify the row number and column number property value for each placeholder and text label
to correspond to each rack or floor equipment in a location.

Rack diagrams
and schematic diagrams can use the same templates as long as they are imported individually for
each.

CHAPTER 16 – Tenants and Filters

This chapter will introduce you to tenants and Filters. We will learn how to create tenants, assign
equipment to tenants, import tenants, and use tenants to better manage data center sites. We will also
learn how to use filters to better manage data center sites.

T
he different functional divisions that exist within an organization are known in NetZoom
Pro as tenants. The use of the tenants feature allows the data center to be categorizized by
tenant to increase productivity and control unauthorized access to assets.

Tenancy allows you to better organize, group, and manage the different functional aspects of a data
center. For example, an organization may have one data center, but the devices within the data
center are attributed to different departments within the organization such as development, quality
control, marketing, etc. Another example is a co-location hosting organization which may have
many sub organizations distributed throughout the data center. In these cases, the concept of
tenancy can greatly facilitate the organization, grouping, and management of these sub-
organizations. Tenancy can be leveraged to manage many time consuming aspects of a data center
such as attributing, power usage, equipment cost, etc. to specific departments. For hosting services,
it facilitates better tracking and management of clients, and better attribution of usage and billing can
be achieved.

Tenants can greatly increase productivity by filtering the data center and allowing you to focus on
equipment of interest based on functional division. It enables you to create more meaningful reports
and diagrams by displaying only assets of interest.

You can also generate chargeback reports specifically related to each tenant.

In another case, a user may wish to view only racks in their data center where heat dissipation is
within 80% of the threshold value. In this case, a user may use a filter that compares the heat
dissipation value to the threshold to determine racks that match the criteria. When the user selects
this filter, the data center site will be automatically filtered to display only racks where heat
dissipation is within 80% of threshold.

Filters allow you to easily manage your data center by filtering the site based on pre-defined criteria.
It can greatly increase productivity by filtering the data center and allowing you to focus on devices
of interest. In addition, it enables you to create more meaningful reports and diagrams by reporting
only assets of interest.

18.2 Customize Report Templates

SQL Report templates can be customized using Microsoft SQL Server Report Builder 2.0. You can use
any feature of SQL Reporting Services. However, to extract data you must embed SQL queries directly
within the template. SQL templates use custom headers and footers for each template.

Data Sets

Data Sets are SQL queries that extract information out of the databases to help you generate reports.
Data Sets are based on the databases, and are composed of advanced SQL queries. Data sets must
be embedded within the report template, by planning the data and columns that will be required in
your templates.

To ensure data sets work correctly, you must have data center sites and data in these sites.

Once templates are created or modified they must be saved, so they can be imported for use. Ensure that
if you are modifying a pre-built template, you re-import the template with a new name to prevent
overriding the existing template or losing your changes during an upgrade.

Note

If you require customized templates for your data center, you can e-mail us at Support@NetZoom.com or call

CHAPTER 21 – Discovery
This chapter will provide an introduction to discovery in NetZoom Pro.

W
ith NetZoom Pro’s Discovery, you can discover your data center using protocols such as
IPMI, TCP, WMI and SNMP.
Using discovery in NetZoom Pro, you can:
 Discover equipment
 Retrieve additional network equipment information such as server CPU, disk activity,
memory, hard disk, software installed
 And much more

Since not all equipment has the same networking characteristics, different discovery methods and
parameters will need to be used to discover one or more devices. These are called Discovery Profiles
in NetZoom Pro.

199
D I S C O V E R Y

21.1 Define Discovery Profiles

To discover network equipment, you must be connected to the network and authorized to discover
equipment. To learn more, refer to Appendix 13 - Prepare Devices for Discovery and consult your
network administrator to change network settings as required.

First define one or more Discovery Profiles.

1. In the NetZoom Pro Client, click on the Manager tab.

2. Select Discovery.
3. In the Discovery Profiles pane, click on the green add button to add a new Discovery Profile.

4. Provide a Name for the profile and select the discovery methods and options for each method
then click ‘Save’.
 ICMP – Simple ping based discovery
 SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 – SNMP query-based discovery which requires a valid
SNMP read community ID or v3 Key.
 TCP - Port scan of user-specified TCP ports to determine existence of a device
 WMI – WMI query-based discovery, which requires the scanning server to have
Microsoft RPC access to target device in order to succeed in WMI query

5. Each differing set of network credentials needs its own Discovery Profile defined.

6. To modify settings for a Discovery Profile; select the profile, make your changes and click
‘Save’.
7. To delete a Discovery Profile, select the profile and click the red delete button.

21.4 Discovery Explorer

The Discovery Explorer will allow you to review the devices discovered with each Discovery Profile,
represented as a hierarchical tree.

Launch NetZoom Pro Client and select the Discovery tab.

The discovery explorer is organized by nodes:

 Discovery – Represents the collection of discovery profiles. It also serves as the single root
node for the discovery profiles and equipment within.
 Discovery Profile – Represents each discovery profile associated with this data center site.
Contains the collection of equipment with specific IP addresses associated with the
discovery profile.
 Equipment – Represented by a single IP address.

You may choose to view the network in a different format.

1. Select the Discovery tab in NetZoom Pro Client.

2. Select your preferred view for the discovery explorer from the second drop down list:

 Tree View - Displays the discovered networks and assets in a hierarchical tree format.
 List View – Displays the selected network from the selected data collector as a list of assets
along with host name, IP address, and status. Green status indicates the device is active. Red
status indicates the device is inactive.

3. If you choose list view, you must select a profile from the drop down list. Click the … button to
view the respective right-click menu commands.

A.13 Prepare Devices for Discovery

In order to successfully accomplish discovery scanning, the following list of steps should be
reviewed. It is also recommended that the person setting up the scan be familiar with network
topology and configuration basics regarding address space, subnet, routers, firewall, ports, SNMP,
WMI, etc.

NetZoom Pro is capable of scans based on the following selections.

 Single IP
 IP Range
 Network subnet range
 DNS - In order to obtain a list of hosts via DNS, the target DNS server must allow Zone
Transfer privileges to the computer in which NetZoom Pro is installed.

 Scanning Hosts listed in Active Directory - Requires authentication to access Active

Directory Information.

The NetZoom Pro discovery is provided with a list/range of IP addresses to scan.

 There must be routes to the target IP addresses.
 Any firewall between NetZoom Pro and target IP must allow some of these ports. Not all
the ports listed are necessary but will increase the chances of successfully discovering nodes.
o Ping (ICMP 0, 8)
o SNMP (UDP 161, 162)
o WMI (TCP 135)
o TCP (Common Ports) (TCP 21, 23, 25, 80, 110)

266
A P P E N D I X

 Any firewall implemented at the target must be disabled/ports opened to the following list
of ports. Not all the ports listed are necessary, but will increase the chance of the node being
discovered.
o Ping (ICMP 0, 8)
o SNMP (UDP 161, 162)
o WMI (TCP 135)
o TCP (Common Ports) (TCP 21, 23, 25, 80, 110)
 For Microsoft Windows-based machines, WMI access privileges and fully functional
RPC/DCOM access are needed at the target node.
 SNMP service must be installed and configured properly in target nodes.
 TCP port scanning may trigger Network Intrusion Alerts if network intrusion detection is
implemented within an organization.

267
A P P E N D I X

When using SNMP:

1. SNMP Read Community

SNMP read community acts like a password. The scanning server must correctly identify the
target node’s read community string in order to read the SNMP values of the target node.

2. Configuring the Remote Windows Device

a. Install the Simple Network Management Protocol and WMI SNMP Provider.
--- Control Panel > Add & Remove Programs > Windows Components > Management
and Monitoring Tools > Details
--- Check the boxes for Simple Network Management Protocol and WMI SNMP
Provider.

b. In Services, access the Properties window for the SNMP Service.

268
A P P E N D I X

In the Traps tab:

--- Community Name: Enter the community string or SNMP credential NetZoom Pro
will be using to connect.

In the Security tab:

--- Check ‘Send authentication trap’.
--- Click Add under ‘Accepted community names’. Enter the community string or
SNMP credential NetZoom Pro will be using to connect.
--- Select ‘Accept SNMP packets from these hosts’. Click Add. Enter localhost and the
IP address of the NetZoom Pro machine.

269
A P P E N D I X

When using WMI:

RPC (Remote Procedure Call) is a Microsoft mechanism for communication between processes.
Click this link (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738291.aspx) for details. RPC
must be available on the monitored device in order to use WMI.

If an error indicates that the monitored device is unavailable, this usually means that it is not
possible to connect to the device. Be sure that default WMI port 135 is not blocked or preempted
on the target device. Microsoft provides a utility called WBEMTEST that can be used to confirm
that WMI is properly configured on the target device.

1. Start > Run > WBEMTEST.

2. Click Connect.

270
A P P E N D I X

3. Under Namespace, enter ‘\\hostname or IP address\root\CIMV2’.

4. Enter the same credentials you're using with your scanner.

5. If you have verified credentials, but cannot connect using WBEMTEST and cannot see the
expected WMI classes and counters, then WMI is probably disabled or configured
incorrectly on the target machine.

When using NetBIOS:

To enable NetBT for computers running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, open ‘Network
Connections’, right-click a connection, click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component, click
Properties, click Advanced, select the ‘WINS’ tab, and click the appropriate option in NetBIOS
setting, as shown below.

 Default
Enables NetBT if the network connection has a static IPv4 address configuration. If the
network connection uses the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), it uses the
DHCP options in the received DHCP Offer message to either disable NetBT or enable and
configure NetBT. To disable NetBT using DHCP, configure the Disable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP (NetBT) Microsoft vendor-specific option for the value of 2. This is the default
setting for LAN connections.
 Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Enables NetBT, regardless of the DHCP options received. This is the default setting for
remote connections (dial-up or virtual private network).
 Disable NetBIOS over NetBIOS
Disables NetBT, regardless of the DHCP options received.

A P P E N D I X

Firewall

The firewall on target node and any firewall between the scanning server and target node must allow
WMI port TCP 135 to be opened.

DNS

The machine running NetZoom Pro discovery must have access to the DNS server. Alternatively,
all of the target hosts must be mapped within the LMHOSTS file.
