Manager
Users
MANAGER (1)
Users who control full functionality of the data center site and are not limited by role-based
security. The Manager approves Users
USERS (1-N)
Users who perform site specific tasks on the data center site and are governed by role-based
security.
All users must activate with a valid Subscription Number before using NetZoom Pro and approval
is required according to the following schema:
3
N E T Z O O M P R O O V E R V I E W
Each single subscription number is valid for a predetermined number of users, either 1, 3, 5,
10, 15, or 20. The number is be shared between Users.
Each single user subscription number is valid for a 50 Racks. Adding additional user
subscription numbers increases this Rack count by 50 for each additional user. The number
of allowed Racks is shared between all active Users.
When a subscription number is activated by the Manager, the Manager has complete access
to the data center site and all NetZoom Pro features. The Manager is not restricted by role-
based security.
When a subscription number is activated by a User, the User has restricted access to the data
center site and NetZoom Pro features. A User is restricted by role-based security on the data
center site.
Each time the Manager or a User is removed, the subscription number is released and is
available for use by another Manager or User as long it is not expired.
When a subscription number expires, access to the data center site and NetZoom Pro
features are disabled for that User or Manager until a non-expired subscription number is
activated for that User or Manager.
When ordering subscription numbers, determine the count of people acting as the Manager
and Users and your Rack count. This will help you decide how many 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20 user
licenses must be ordered.

o effectively model a data center you’ll need to have an understanding of the tools and methods
available to assist you in organizing and managing the construction of a data center.
This chapter covers ways to design your hierarchy, how to add devices to a rack though
dragging and dropping, management of decommissioned equipment, and Explorer.
45
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E
Modeling a data center requires planning and forethought, the old adage of “fail to plan, plan to fail”
holds true with the newest of solutions. Just as your data center did not come together in one day,
neither will your DCIM implementation. Planning ahead is essential.
Planning out your Data Center Site Location Hierarchy lets users have a clear idea of how to Model
their site during the rest of implementation.
One Site or Many? – Each NetZoom Pro installation supports one site; a site is a logical
separation of data center locations. The level of separation is up to you, it may be that each
physical data center in your enterprise receives its own site, it may be that each State, or
region instead has its own site in which multiple data centers are supported on the same site.
Some guiding items to consider:
Note
As you expand, keep in mind that you can always upgrade to NetZoomDC, our Enterprise level DCIM.
NetZoomDC supports multiple sites.
46
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E
5.2 Explorer
NetZoom Pro allows you to model, manage, monitor, and maximize your data center potential.
With NetZoom Pro, you can manage your data center site with no limits to the number of locations,
racks or assets you wish to manage. Racks can be configured using rack mountable equipment, and
you may also have floor equipment. NetZoom Pro lets you manage both facility infrastructure and
IT infrastructure.
Data centers are made of hundreds and thousands of devices, racks, and other equipment. You can
easily organize the physical infrastructure of your data center and the entire inventory of hardware
within Explorer which is represented as a hierarchical tree.
Explorer allows you to manage your data center site as a logical topology representing entities such
as locations, racks, equipment, ports, plugs, and slots as nodes. These entities serve as building
blocks for creating your data center and allow you to organize your data center in a simple or
complex fashion.
A data center site will only display equipment and properties that a user has access to, based on the
access permissions assigned to their roles or their assigned tenants and filters. You can choose to
view your data center’s IT infrastructure or Facility infrastructure by checking on unchecking the
options on top of Explorer.
47
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E
DataCenter – Represents the data center site being managed. It also serves as the single
root node for the data center within which the data center is managed.
Rack – A cabinet where equipment can be mounted for ease of management. Racks can
be configured or populated with devices, servers, PDUs and patch panels. Data centers are
usually comprised of multiple racks.
PDU – Equipment that distributes electric power. Usually power distribution units and
they contain power ports.
RU and Slot – Represents a rack unit or a chassis slot where other equipment can be
placed.
48
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E
Explorer also comes with other special nodes meant for specific purposes. These nodes cannot be
renamed or removed except the Unused nodes. These nodes are common to all users.
Unused Devices - The Unused Devices node collectivity displays references to all the
equipment removed in the entire data center from each individual unused bin. Equipment
here can only be expanded up till their shape views so you may view their data and preview
their images.
Unused – The Unused node collects the removed equipment from respective locations in
the data center. Equipment here can only be expanded up till their shape views so you may
view their data and preview their images.
My Staging Area – Available in Site Mode to allow you to freely design, model, and create
parts of your data center before committing it to a live site. It can be used just like the Site
node. Data center and rack import can only be performed in the Staging Area. Planning and
change management cannot be performed within the Staging Area; therefore the changes
made in Staging Area are not logged. They do not require approval either since the contents
of the staging are not part of your live site. To make them part of your live site, you must
move them to the live data center site above. Any moves to the live data center will be
logged in the Maintenance Log. The nodes in the ‘My Staging Area’ are separate for each
individual user on each data center site. The Manager will see the combined ‘My Staging
Area’ of all users.
Task Queue Status – This icon will display the count of active tasks such as; imports,
recalculate, discovery, monitoring, etc. Clicking on this icon opens the detailed log.
Multi-Select – This icon located at the top of the Explorer Pane will enable and disable
the multi-select feature for use with Watermarks.
49
M O D E L I N G A D A T A C E N T E R S I T E
There are two ways of implementing a data center location hierarchy. One is by manually adding
data center locations directly within the application, this topic is covered here. The other is utilizing
an import spreadsheet which is covered in Chapter 9 – Import and Export Using Microsoft Excel.
If your hierarchy is simple or small, manual locations are a quick and easy to create. You can
manually create your data center location hierarchy either in the Staging Area, or directly in the Live
Site.
The Staging Area is a node in Explorer which allows you to freely design, model, and create parts of

First a bit of clarification on terminology that you’ll frequently be seeing in this chapter;
Microsoft defines a Visio shape as: “Anything is a shape in Visio, including pictures and text”
Exceptionally detailed, accurate, true to life, colored graphic representations of their real life
counterparts.
Scalable vector graphics, which can be scaled to any size without loss of resolution.
Contain equipment slots, data ports, and power ports to match manufacturer specifications.
Come with built-in active connection points that correspond to equipment ports and slots,
which allow mounting and port-level connectivity.

Search by Keyword
Search by keyword is the most direct and common search, if you know the name of the equipment
you’re looking for then start here.
2. Enter your keyword or phrase. Example: DELL664, rack, 6509, etc. Or select a
previously searched keyword or phrase from the drop down list.
Any Word – performs a search as if there is a logical ‘OR’ between the search terms.
Example: “Ethernet switch” will find all results that match either of the search terms
“Ethernet” or “Switch.
All Words - performs a search as if there is a logical ‘AND’ between the search
terms. Example: “Ethernet switch” will find all results that match both search terms
“Ethernet” and “Switch.
4. You may also further refine your search by selecting a Manufacturer and/or Attribute
from the combo boxes.
5. Click the icon. Resulting shapes will be displayed under the Results tab.

Good planning and accurate layout is critical for a successful import, this section will teach you how
to create a physical layout import.
1. Rename the first worksheet to the highest level location in your data center. (in the above
example Floor 10 is the highest location, Room A is in Floor 10 and Row 1-6 are in Room A)
2. Data center infrastructure can be divided into multiple location levels. Create columns
(maximum ten) to represent each location level as LocLevel1, LocLevel2, LocLevel3, and so on.
3. Use the first row in each worksheet to enter column headings. LocLevel1 and LocLevel2 are

Room A making this hierarchy 3 levels deep).
6. You can use the columns Xpos , Ypos, Xtiles, Ytiles to position the location on the site floor
map. These settings are optional for import, however required for the Site Preview to display
properly. To learn more, refer to Section 13.5 – How to Customize Site Layout Previews.
7. If you provide address or longitude and latitude information for locations, connections made
between different locations will be displayed on the Location Map previews.

In order to import your connections you’ll need to have first imported, configured and verified all of
the devices in your Device Import so that you have ports available and ready to make connections.
You’ll also need to ensure that any rack where you’ll be importing connections to has an Asset ID. If
your organization doesn’t use AssetID’s you’ll need to fill in some unique value for each rack to act
as a stand in (Some users have used Serial Numbers as a stand in for Asset ID).
1. FromAsset – This is the first string of the connection, the formula is: AssetID~ F or R based
on what side of the rack that you’re making the connection on ~ RU#X This is the RU that the
device starts at, which is the lowest RU that it fills.
Example: AssetID~F~RU#7
For some devices the string can stop at the rack unit if that’s where the port in question resides.
However, for some devices the port will be inside of a card or module; in NetZoom Pro those
are referred to as Slots. You’ll need to refer to the device in question to check if it has slots and
how many slots it may have. Some devices with modular ports may have several levels of Slots
before the port itself.
For Devices with slots a connectivity string can appear much longer:
AssetID~(F/R)~RU#X~Slot#Y~Slot#Z
Example: AssetID~F~RU#7~Slot#1~Slot#2
2. FromPort – This is the port name that your making your connection to, it should appear exactly
as it does in NetZoom, typically that means the type of port that it is along with a port number,
such as in our example of RJ45#1.
3. ToAsset – This is the same as FromAsset but for the destination port.
4. ToPort – This is the same as FromPort but for the destination port.

he different functional divisions that exist within an organization are known in NetZoom
Pro as tenants. The use of the tenants feature allows the data center to be categorizized by
tenant to increase productivity and control unauthorized access to assets.
Tenancy allows you to better organize, group, and manage the different functional aspects of a data
center. For example, an organization may have one data center, but the devices within the data
center are attributed to different departments within the organization such as development, quality
control, marketing, etc. Another example is a co-location hosting organization which may have
many sub organizations distributed throughout the data center. In these cases, the concept of
tenancy can greatly facilitate the organization, grouping, and management of these sub-
organizations. Tenancy can be leveraged to manage many time consuming aspects of a data center
such as attributing, power usage, equipment cost, etc. to specific departments. For hosting services,
it facilitates better tracking and management of clients, and better attribution of usage and billing can
be achieved.
Tenants can greatly increase productivity by filtering the data center and allowing you to focus on
equipment of interest based on functional division. It enables you to create more meaningful reports
and diagrams by displaying only assets of interest.
You can also generate chargeback reports specifically related to each tenant.
In another case, a user may wish to view only racks in their data center where heat dissipation is
within 80% of the threshold value. In this case, a user may use a filter that compares the heat
dissipation value to the threshold to determine racks that match the criteria. When the user selects
this filter, the data center site will be automatically filtered to display only racks where heat
dissipation is within 80% of threshold.
Filters allow you to easily manage your data center by filtering the site based on pre-defined criteria.
It can greatly increase productivity by filtering the data center and allowing you to focus on devices

only assets of interest.

Data Sets
Data Sets are SQL queries that extract information out of the databases to help you generate reports.
Data Sets are based on the databases, and are composed of advanced SQL queries. Data sets must
be embedded within the report template, by planning the data and columns that will be required in
your templates.
To ensure data sets work correctly, you must have data center sites and data in these sites.
Once templates are created or modified they must be saved, so they can be imported for use. Ensure that
if you are modifying a pre-built template, you re-import the template with a new name to prevent
overriding the existing template or losing your changes during an upgrade.

CHAPTER 21 – Discovery
This chapter will provide an introduction to discovery in NetZoom Pro.
W
ith NetZoom Pro’s Discovery, you can discover your data center using protocols such as
IPMI, TCP, WMI and SNMP.
Using discovery in NetZoom Pro, you can:
Discover equipment
Retrieve additional network equipment information such as server CPU, disk activity,
memory, hard disk, software installed
And much more
Since not all equipment has the same networking characteristics, different discovery methods and
parameters will need to be used to discover one or more devices. These are called Discovery Profiles
in NetZoom Pro.
199
D I S C O V E R Y
2. Select Discovery.
3. In the Discovery Profiles pane, click on the green add button to add a new Discovery Profile.
4. Provide a Name for the profile and select the discovery methods and options for each method
then click ‘Save’.
ICMP – Simple ping based discovery
SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3 – SNMP query-based discovery which requires a valid
SNMP read community ID or v3 Key.
TCP - Port scan of user-specified TCP ports to determine existence of a device
WMI – WMI query-based discovery, which requires the scanning server to have
Microsoft RPC access to target device in order to succeed in WMI query
5. Each differing set of network credentials needs its own Discovery Profile defined.
6. To modify settings for a Discovery Profile; select the profile, make your changes and click
‘Save’.
7. To delete a Discovery Profile, select the profile and click the red delete button.

Any firewall implemented at the target must be disabled/ports opened to the following list
of ports. Not all the ports listed are necessary, but will increase the chance of the node being
discovered.
o Ping (ICMP 0, 8)
o SNMP (UDP 161, 162)
o WMI (TCP 135)
o TCP (Common Ports) (TCP 21, 23, 25, 80, 110)
For Microsoft Windows-based machines, WMI access privileges and fully functional
RPC/DCOM access are needed at the target node.
SNMP service must be installed and configured properly in target nodes.
TCP port scanning may trigger Network Intrusion Alerts if network intrusion detection is
implemented within an organization.

RPC (Remote Procedure Call) is a Microsoft mechanism for communication between processes.
Click this link (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738291.aspx) for details. RPC
must be available on the monitored device in order to use WMI.
If an error indicates that the monitored device is unavailable, this usually means that it is not
possible to connect to the device. Be sure that default WMI port 135 is not blocked or preempted
on the target device. Microsoft provides a utility called WBEMTEST that can be used to confirm
that WMI is properly configured on the target device.
2. Click Connect.
270
A P P E N D I X
5. If you have verified credentials, but cannot connect using WBEMTEST and cannot see the
expected WMI classes and counters, then WMI is probably disabled or configured
incorrectly on the target machine.

To enable NetBT for computers running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, open ‘Network
Connections’, right-click a connection, click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) component, click
Properties, click Advanced, select the ‘WINS’ tab, and click the appropriate option in NetBIOS
setting, as shown below.
Default
Enables NetBT if the network connection has a static IPv4 address configuration. If the
network connection uses the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), it uses the
DHCP options in the received DHCP Offer message to either disable NetBT or enable and
configure NetBT. To disable NetBT using DHCP, configure the Disable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP (NetBT) Microsoft vendor-specific option for the value of 2. This is the default
setting for LAN connections.
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Enables NetBT, regardless of the DHCP options received. This is the default setting for
remote connections (dial-up or virtual private network).
Disable NetBIOS over NetBIOS
Disables NetBT, regardless of the DHCP options received.
Configure the DHCP client to enable the DHCP server to determine NetBIOS behavior
272

Firewall
The firewall on target node and any firewall between the scanning server and target node must allow
WMI port TCP 135 to be opened.
DNS
The machine running NetZoom Pro discovery must have access to the DNS server. Alternatively,
all of the target hosts must be mapped within the LMHOSTS file.
Important Notes:
Some Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 WMI are inaccessible even via administrator level
accounts.
2. Type regedit.exe to start the Registry Editor. If you get the UAC prompt, acknowledge it.
4. On the Edit menu, select New and click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
