Learning activity 3

Evidence: Environmental issues

In this activity you are going to propose possible solutions for environmental
problems. Read about the following environmental issues from the introductory
material, select one of the problems and make a presentation in Microsoft
PowerPoint or another tool of your preference with your opinion about them.

Answer these questions when writing your opinion. Use zero and first
conditional:

1. What do you think about the problem?

2. What would be a possible solution for it?
3. Do you see this problem in your community? What do people do about it?
4. What will you do in the future to help solve this problem?

Every year tons of garbage are thrown

into the ocean. This contaminates the
water and affects ocean animals and
their habitat.

Every day thousands of newspapers are

read and then disposed of in regular
garbage.

This increases the number of trees being

cut to produce paper. If we recycled this
paper, thousands of trees could be saved.

About 5 million tons of oil produced in

the world go to the ocean at the end,
contaminating the water and killing
many species.

The human population is alarmingly

growing, 100 years ago there were 2 billion
people in the world. Now there are about
7.5 billion inhabitants!

97% of the world’s water is salty and

therefore cannot be drunk. Just 1% of
the world’s water can be properly
used.
The remaining 2% is frozen.

Every hour, thousands of plastic bottles are
used and disposed of as regular garbage.
Sadly, only a small portion of plastic bottles
is recycled around the globe.

About 1 million sea animals die every

year due to plastic garbage thrown in
to the ocean.

100 acres of rainforest is cut every

minute. If the trend continues, soon we will
not have any rainforest left.

Write your answers to these questions in your presentation. Remember to

support your ideas and add some pictures to illustrate your opinion.

Example:

Problem selected: Overpopulation.

1. What do you think about the problem?

I think this is a really serious problem. If population continues to grow that
fast, there will not be enough resources for everyone. We need to stop this
problem now.

2. What would be a possible solution for it?

The only solution is to make people aware of the situation. Governments

need to invest money in educational campaigns to prevent and support this
problem. Especially in poor communities where this problem is more
evident.

3. Do you see this problem in your community? What do people do about it?

This problem is quite common in my country. Every day you see thousands
of young women having more and more kids. In some cases, the real
problem is that they do not have the economic means to have a stable
family. In the end, these kids end up following their parents’ example, and it
turns into a vicious circle.

4. What will you do in the future to help solve this problem?

I will participate in educational campaigns to prevent this problem and

make people aware of the situation. I will only have a child.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE PROBLEM?

think this is a problem that affects us all around the world, If there are not
enough trees there is too much CO2 in the atmosphere and  If there is too much
CO2 in the atmosphere, people will get diseases, especially respiratory
diseases.
WHAT WOULD BE POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOT IT?

If the wood is replaced by another product that is friendly, it wil do good to the

I do

WHAT DO PEOPLE DO  ABOUT IT?

Currently here in Bucaramanga, If a person climbs a tree, that person will

prevent them from cutting the tree. This has happened a few times.
The government listens to you if many people demonstrate and demand that
the trees not be cut down.
If Many people prefer to read the news digitally, fewer trees are cut for the
production of newspapers.

WHAT WILL YOU DO IN THE FUTURE TO HELP SOLVE THIS PROBLEM?

There will be more trees if I buy organic products.

The environment is happy if I avoid consuming products that cause the
indiscriminate felling of trees, such as palm oil.
If I reuse the sheets of paper and use recycled paper there will be fewer trees
cut down.
