Chemistry assignment 8

I. Write down some points which you understand from the notes?
 The topic explains about empirical formula, molecular formula
 Relationship between empirical and molecular formula
 The examples of empirical and molecular formula
 The calculation of empirical and molecular formula
II. Explain why there is a need of empirical formula in chemistry?
Empirical formulas show the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. It is
important because without it we cannot define anything for ionic compounds Like
molecular formulas, empirical formulas are not unique and can describe a number of
different chemical structures or isomers. Empirical formulas can be determined using
mass composition data.
III. Write the molecular formulas of the following compounds:
A compound with an empirical formula of C2OH4 and a molar mass of 88 grams per
mole.
Relative Formula Mass: Carbon : 2 Oxygen : 1 Hydrogen : 4
(2 x 12) + (1 x 16) + (4 x 1) = 44
Relative Formula Mass / Relative Formula Mass of Empirical Formula=
88 / 44 = 2
44 * 2 = 88
C2OH4 * 2 = C4O2H8
Molecular formula = C4O2H8
A compound with an empirical formula of C4H4O and a molar mass of 136 grams
per mole.
Relative Formula Mass: Carbon : 4 Oxygen : 1 Hydrogen : 4
(4 x 12) + (1 x 16) + (4 x 1) = 68
Relative Formula Mass / Relative Formula Mass of Empirical Formula=
136 / 68 = 2
68 * 2 = 136
C4H4O * 2 = C8H8O2
Molecular formula = C8H8O2
A compound with an empirical formula of C2H8N and a molar mass of 46 grams per
mole.
Relative Formula Mass: Carbon : 2 Nitrogen : 1 Hydrogen : 8
(2 x 12) + (1 x 14) + (8 x 1) = 46
Relative Formula Mass / Relative Formula Mass of Empirical Formula=
46/ 46 = 1
46 * 1 = 46
C2H8N* 1 = C2H8N
Molecular formula = C2H8N
VI. Write the molecular formulas of the following compounds:
What’s the empirical formula of a molecule containing 65.5% carbon, 5.5%
hydrogen, and 29.0% oxygen?
C=65.5*(1/12)=5.46 mol/1.81 mol=3.02 ........ 3
H=5.5*(1/1)=5.50 mol/1.81 mol=3.03 ........ 3
O=29*(1/16)=1.81 mol/1.81 mol=1 ........ 1
Molecular formula= C3H3O
VII. If the molar mass of the compound in problem 1 is 110 grams/mole, what’s the
molecular formula?
Molar mass of the empirical formula is 3x12 + 3x1 + 1x16 = 55
Molar mass of the compound is 110 g/mole
110/55 = 2
Molecular formula= C6H6O2
VIII. What’s the empirical formula of a molecule containing 18.7% lithium, 16.3%
carbon, and 65.0% oxygen?
L=18.7*(1/7)=2.67 mol/1.36 mol=1.96........ 2
C=16.3*(1/12)=1.36 mol/1.36 mol=1 ........ 1
O=65*(1/16)=4.06 mol/1.36 mol=2.99 ........ 3
Molecular formula= L2C1O3
