Title: Bio-remediation of Acid Mine Drainage

Problem Identified: Acid Mine Drainage

1. Chemical compounds:
 FeS2 , Fe(OH)3 , H2SO4 , O2 , H2O

2. Chemical Reaction involved:

 Oxidation
 Forming of Precipitate
 Hydrolysis

3. Source:
 Mining is done to extract coal or metals from sulfur-bearing
rocks.
 Silver, gold, copper, zinc, and lead are commonly found in
association with metal sulfates, so their extraction can
cause acid mine drainage.
 Rainwater or streams become acidified after they run
through the mine’s tailing.

4. Formation of acid mine:

 2FeS2 + 7O2 + 2H2O -------> 4Fe2+ + 4SO4 + 4H+
 4Fe2+ + 7O2 + 2H2O -------> 4Fe3+ + 2H2O
 2Fe3+ + 12H2O -------> 4Fe(OH)3 + 12H+
 FeS2 + 14Fe3+ + 8H2O -------> 15Fe2+ + 2SO42- + 16H+
 MS (metal sulfide) + 2Fe3+ -------> M2+ + S + 2Fe2+
Overall reaction: 4FeS2 + 15O2 + 14H2O -------> 4Fe(OH)3 +
8H2SO4
Proposed solution: Bio-remediation - Sulfur reducing bacteria
& Iron reducing bacteria.

 Sulfur reducing bacteria

1. Chemical compounds: SO42- , H2S , S0

2. Reaction: Oxidation & reduction

3. Formation:
 Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) utilize organic carbon for
sulfate reduction, while generating biogenic H2S and
alkalinity.
 2CH2O + SO42- -------> H2S + 2H2CO3-
 HCO3- + H+ -------> H2O + CO2

 This results in the precipitation of heavy metals in AMD and

an increase in pH and alkalinity. Biogenic H2S will then react
with metallic ions (Me2+) present in AMD and forms metal
sulfides (MeS), while hydroxide ions (HCO3-) will react with
protons (H+) to neutralize acidic waters.
 HCO3- + H+ -------> H2O + CO2
 Me2+ + HS- -------> MeS + H+
Me2+ can be exmple for copper, zinc or etc.

 The expected resulting sulfate-reducing environment will

include a decrease in sulfate concentration and heavy metals,
as well as an increase in pH and alkalinity.
4. Condition for Sulfur Reducing Bacteria to live.
 pH
 Temperature
 Solid support
 Inhibitor effect
 Hydraulic retention time

5. Advantages:
 Low maintenance costs.
 Removed heavy metals
 Minimal sludge production
 Reduction of potential pathogens presence.
 Iron reducing bacteria

1. Chemical compounds: SO42- ,

2. Reaction: Oxidation & Reduction

3. Formation:
Bacteria catalyse the breakdown of the mineral pyrite (FeS2)
by oxidising the sulfur and metal (Fe2+) using oxygen.
 Disulfide is spontaneously oxidized to thiosulfate by ferric
ion (Fe3+), which in turn is reduced to give ferrous ion (Fe2+):
(1) FeS2 + 6Fe3+ + 3H2O -------> 7Fe2+ + S2O32- + 6H+

 The ferrous ion is then oxidized by bacteria using oxygen

(2) 4Fe2+ + O2 + 4H+ -------> 4Fe3+ + 2H2O

 Thiosulfate is also oxidized by bacteria to give sulfate

(3) S2O32- + 2O2 + H2O -------> 2SO42- + 2H+

 The ferric ion produced in reaction (2) oxidized more sulfide

as in reaction (1), closing the cycle and given the net
reaction:
(4) 2FeS2 + + 7O2 + 2H2O -------> 2Fe2+ + 4SO42- + 4H+

4. Advantages
 Low maintenance costs.
 Removed heavy metals
2. Task Distribution
