Chapter 2. Troubleshooting

The aim of this chapter is, in case a fault occurs, to find the probable origin and to isolate any failed compo-
nent or sub-assembly; the required actions are then detailed.

1. Method ■ Possible failures are listed in § 2. "Failure modes". These fail-

ures are classified as follows:
- A. Declared faults,
- B. Abnormal test results,
- C. Other faults.

❏ Other abnormal events may occur: it is then up to the repairman

using analyses and comparisons to find the solution. Simplified
interconnecting schematics are provided in §5. of this chapter, they
may help when trying to locate failures.

Of course, in case of difficulty or doubt, the engineering services of

Chopin are available to try to solve the problem, via telephone or
fax.

If this fails, the unit will have to be sent to Chopin for in-workshop
troubleshooting and repair.

■ Before starting any troubleshooting, all useful indications should

be recorded.

❏ The written comments could be useful, as long as they have been

filled during the previous intervention.

❏ Regardless of the failure, it is recommended to carefully note the

conditions under which the failure occurred.

■ For most failure modes, the charts in §3. "Troubleshooting

instructions" indicate the isolation process that must be followed
chronologically.

B Abnormal test results

For the exploitation of the "normal" results, i. e. for an apparatus in

good working order, refer to the SDmatic Instruction manual.

IMPORTANT NOTE Some internal failures may lead to apparently plausible test result.

Illogical results could come from a damaged or unsettled measuring

probe, or from a bad solution.

The same type of faults may occur if the test is incorrectly carried
out. Therefore, make sure that all the utilisation parameters and
instructions are respected.

When a test result is suspicious, a control test using a standard

flour sample should be carried out.

If the illogical results remain, calibrate the SDmatic again (see

op. 14 p.65).

If the illogical results remain, return the SDmatic to Chopin.

measuring cycle B - From the moment the heating resistor brings the solution to the
proper temperature (35°C, stage 1), the probe electrochemically
produces iodine according to the mass of flour to be tested (stage 2
and 3);

C - Stage 4: The plateau allows to measure the exact amount of the

current (hence of iodine) generated (maximum value: Im);

D - Stage 5: at the end of the plateau, the flour is introduced in the

reaction bowl and it starts fixing iodine. The current decreases
according to the iodine absorption;

E - Stage 6: 180 seconds after introduction of the flour, the probe

measures the value of the current (Ir).

Chapter 4. Spare parts

1. Warnings ■ The illustrated parts lists contain all pieces of information neces-
sary to identify spare parts and spare sub-assemblies, and pur-
chase them from the original manufacturer.

The lists also include the detail description of all fasteners that may
need to be replaced, if damaged or lost, when replacing these spare
units.

■ Any further dismantling is to be strongly discouraged, it is then

carried out under the operator’s own responsibility.

It is a fact that, on one hand, repair procedures of chapter 3 do not

cover other spare parts, and on the other hand Chopin will never
provide other parts than those referenced in these lists.

2. Notes ■ Fastener-type parts that have no Chopin part number shall not be
purchased from Chopin, but directly from a general retailer.

■ Except otherwise mentioned, all metallic fasteners are stainless

steel-made.

■ All parts having a Chopin part number shall imperatively be pur-

chased from Chopin, or from an entitled agent.

■ When making out a purchase order, take care to mention:

❏ the Chopin part number,

❏ the needed quantity (make sure to take into account the minimum
quantity per order).
