4.0 2.0 3.0 2, | DETERMINATION OF FLASH POINT AND FIRE POINT OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL CLS - 1209-1978, CONCEPT AND SIGNIFICANCE The flash point of a material is the lowest temperature at whicn the application of test flame causes the vapours from the material monentarily catch fire in the form of a flash under specified conditions of test. The fire_point is the lowest temperature_at_which_the application of test flame causes the material to ignite and bum at least for 5 seconds under specified conditions of test. At high temperature, bituminous materials emit hydrocarbon vapours whch are susceptible to catch fire. Therefore, the heating temperature of bituminous material should be restricted to avoid hazardous conditions. Flash point and fire point tests are used to determine the temperature to which bituminious material can safely be heated. OBJECTIVE To determine flash point and fire point of the bituminous material, APPARATUS The apparatus as per IS : 1209-1978 consists of : Pensky. Marrtens closed Tester consisting of the following major parts : a) Cup. It is made of brass, the inside of the cup may be tumed to a slightly larger diameter above the filling mark and the outside may be tapered above the flange.
