2, | DETERMINATION OF FLASH POINT AND
FIRE POINT OF BITUMINOUS MATERIAL
CLS - 1209-1978,
CONCEPT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The flash point of a material is the lowest temperature at whicn the
application of test flame causes the vapours from the material monentarily
catch fire in the form of a flash under specified conditions of test.
The fire_point is the lowest temperature_at_which_the application of test
flame causes the material to ignite and bum at least for 5 seconds under
specified conditions of test.
At high temperature, bituminous materials emit hydrocarbon vapours whch
are susceptible to catch fire. Therefore, the heating temperature of
bituminous material should be restricted to avoid hazardous conditions.
Flash point and fire point tests are used to determine the temperature to
which bituminious material can safely be heated.
OBJECTIVE
To determine flash point and fire point of the bituminous material,
APPARATUS
The apparatus as per IS : 1209-1978 consists of :
Pensky. Marrtens closed Tester consisting of the following major parts :
a) Cup. It is made of brass, the inside of the cup may be tumed to a
slightly larger diameter above the filling mark and the outside may
be tapered above the flange. The flange is about 12 mm in width
and approximately 3 mm in thickness. {t is equipped with devices :
