An Aluminium disc is taken as a rotating wheel on which eddy
currents are induced. The wheel is connected to a motor of 200 rpm
and is rotated with the help of two 9 volt batteries. Two
electromagnets again powered by the same 9 volt batteries are used.
The electromagnets cause induction of eddy currents in the rotating
wheel because of their magnetic field. Because of the eddy currents
induced in the aluminium disc, it creates its own magnetic field
which again opposes the magnetic field of the electromagnets and
ultimately causes the wheel to stop rotating.
Eddy currents are loops of electrical current induced
within conductors by a changing magnetic field in the conductor due
to Faraday's law of induction. Eddy currents flow in closed loops
within conductors, in planes perpendicular to the magnetic field . An
eddy current creates a magnetic field that opposes the change in the
magnetic field that created it, and thus eddy currents react back on
the source of the magnetic field.

The wheel is rotated to about 200 rpm with the help of a

motor. The wheel is a disc of aluminium material. Ferromagnetic
materials like iron or steel is not preferred as it will be attracted by
electromagnet. The disc with the motor is mounted on a hinged bar
with two supports on the bottom side. The electromagnets are
mounted on the bar just behind the wheel so that the magnetic
effect is felt by it. The motor connected to the wheel and the
electromagnets both are connected to the same 9V batteries. First,
we push the switch to start rotating the wheel and after a few
seconds, the electromagnets mounted behind the wheels are
switched on while the power rotating the wheel is turned off. We
observed that after a few seconds the rotation of the wheel comes to
a halt. The electromagnets magnetic field lines create circular
currents in the disc called eddy currents and they in turn create a
magnetic field that opposes the field of the electromagnet which
causes the stopping of the rotating wheel.

Electromagnetic braking systems use electronic and

magnetic power to apply wheel brakes. Our system utilizes the
concept of electromagnetism in order to achieve braking without
friction. Eddy braking improves the reliability &life of brakes since
they do not wear out over time due to friction. This needs
comparatively very less maintenance and no oiling. Electromagnetic
braking is an upcoming technological replacement for traditional
braking systems. The main objective behind the proposed use of
these eddy braking system in automobiles is that it is frictionless.
This leads to a very low maintenance cost due to no friction and no
oiling. Also traditional braking systems are prone to slipping while
this one is guaranteed to apply brakes to the vehicle. So without
friction or need of lubrication this technology is a preferred
replacement for traditional braking. Also it is quite smaller in size
compared to the traditional braking systems.
