STL261S – Assignment: Torsion of Shafts

Question 1

In a marine drive application, a torque of 10 kNm is to be transmitted from a hollow phosphor

bronze shaft, whose external diameter is twice its internal diameter, to a solid mild steel shaft,
through a flanged coupling with 12 bolts made from high tensile steel.
1.1 Calculate the dimensions of the hollow shaft if the maximum permissible shear stress in
phosphor bronze is 20 MN/m2. /4/
1.2 If the maximum allowable shear stress in mild steel is limited to 30 MPa, calculate the
diameter of the solid shaft. /4/
1.3 Determine the minimum standard diameter size for the coupling bolts arranged on a 200
mm pitch circle diameter if the allowable shear stress in high tensile steel is limited to 60
MPa.
/4/
1.4 Determine the total angle of twist of the shaft assembly if the hollow shaft is 1.5 m long and
the solid shaft is 1 m long. (Ignore the effects of the coupling). /3/
1.5 Determine the torsional stiffness of each individual shaft as well as the total stiffness of the
assembly. /5/
(GMild Steel = 80 GPa and GPhosphor Bronze = 41 GPa)

Question 2
A marine engine must be coupled to a propeller. There is the option between a 100 mm
diameter solid shaft and a hollow shaft with an outer diameter of 160 mm and an inner
diameter of 120 mm. As a mechanical engineer you are required to make recommendations to
a boat-building company with respect to the propeller shaft. Which shaft will you choose?
Motivate your answer with relevant calculations and explanations. /10/
