    This document presents an approach for efficiently filtering XML documents to selectively disseminate information to users based on their profiles. It describes an XML filtering structure called XFilter that uses a finite state machine to run and evaluate multiple queries simultaneously. It also discusses two enhanced filtering algorithms - list balancing to address skewed candidate lists, and prefiltering to remove impossible matching queries preemptively. An evaluation of these techniques showed that the combination of prefiltering and list balancing worked best.
