A survey was made in order to know the life of the UMS’ students.

We made the survey

through Google Form, where we asked a few questions and we viral the form to all the students
that were studying in the questions. The survey comprised of five questions that are related to
the students’ life in the university.

Figure 1: A graph of students and the faculties

A fun fact about this survey is that, UMS has a total of 11 faculties in which out of all the
faculties, a total of 10 faculties have responded to the UMS. This means that our survey was
reviewed and well-received by the students from the faculties in the UMS. Before the questions
were asked in the Google Form, the respondent had to give their names and the faculties they
were in. From this, we concluded that this survey had been answered by a total of 114 UMS
students. This can be illustrated by the figure above.

Figure 2: A graph of the students’ year in the UMS

From the figure shown above, almost all the respondents were first year students,
including the Degree and the Foundation of Science students, which are 87 students. For the
second year, there were 18 respondents and they were all proven to be the undergraduates’
students as the foundation students are considered as the first year students. Meanwhile, there
were only a few third year students answering this survey which was six students while the
least year would be the fourth year students that had only three respondents.

The first question that was asked in this survey was How Do You Feel About Being And
Studying in UMS. In this question, 59 respondents picked Mixed Emotions as their answer. Why
do they feel so? We do wonder why, but as Foundation of Science UMS students, we can relate
with them as we too are having mixed emotions while being in UMS. The environment is great
and the people are great but there are other things that students need to consider while living
in UMS, which lead us students to have mixed emotions. Moving on to the next option, which
was the second highest emotion picked by the respondents, with a total of 37 respondents,
crowned to the happy emotion. The feeling of uncertain was also experienced by 7 students,
followed by the other unexplained feelings that were picked by 9 students. There was only one
student that felt sad by being and studying in UMS.

Let’s move on to a bit sensitive question which is related to the daily expenses for the
students. For this question, we also put a few options that could be picked by the respondents.
Most of the respondents spend between RM 200 – RM 300 a month and we are sure they spend
most of their expenses on foods and transportation (GRABS of course). As for foods, students
spend a range of RM 10 – RM 20 a day, depends on the students necessity for foods. As for
transportation, most of the UMS students prefer to spend their money on Grab, rather than
waiting for the bus to transport them to their faculties and walking to the faculties themselves.
The second highest option picked by the respondents would be RM 300 – RM 400 students,
with a total of 25 students followed by the option > RM 500. 10% of the students spend RM
400 – RM 500 and only 6% of the respondents spend RM 100 while studying in UMS.

As for Question 3, we didn’t give them any options to answer the question, instead we
let them state their answers according to their own interests. After conducting the survey, we
narrowed down the answers and categorized them into a few options. 35.08% of the
respondents chose to be relaxing during their on off days. They stated they preferred to sleep
and stay indoors when they were free. Next, with the percentage of 6.41%, the respondents
picked to do sports around the UMS by cycling, and some of them stated their hobbies which
were playing volleyball, futsal, football, and playing the basketball. The next option which had
the same percentage as sports would be the option of hanging out (Out from UMS). A few
respondents responded they liked to hang out with their friends and went to the shopping mall
around Kota Kinabalu to spend their leisure time. Most of the male respondents picked playing
games on their phones and laptops during their free times. However, there were students who
preferred to study in their dorms or visit their lecturers when they have off times. The
respondents that did other activities during their leisure time had a percentage of 16.67%.
4. Are you involved in any campus and / or club activities
that UMS has to offer?

Figure 6: Pie Chart for Question 4

For question 4, we asked a question related to the club activities joined by the students’
in UMS. Most of the students answered no and this could be explained by the graphs which
were Figure 1 and Figure 2. From the graphs, we knew that most of the respondents were the
Foundation of Science students and the respondents were mostly in their first year of being in
UMS. 31.60% of the respondents answered Yes, stating they had joined club activities while
being in UMS.

Figure 7: Pie Chart for Question 5

The last question asked in the survey was How Content Are You With The Residence
That UMS Has Provided. 59.60% of the respondents answered neutral. This was due to the fact
that they chose not to be picky as the accommodation provided was fairly furnished and
optimisable. The second highest picked option was satisfied, showing that the respondents felt
comfortable with the residence that UMS had provided. However, some of the respondents
picked unsatisfied with the residence provided by UMS. They were probably having a high
expectation with the accommodation which led them to pick the option. The percentage for the
options Extremely Satisfied and Extremely Unsatisfied were the same, which were 3.50%. The
4 respondents that picked extremely satisfied proved that they felt comfortable with the
residence provided by UMS while 4 other respondents that chose Extremely Unsatisfied chose
that option due to their uncomfortable feelings while residing in UMS.
