 WHILE READING
Read the text and check your answers to part B and C.
In the modern world, pollution is a very serious problem because most of it comes
from machines which man has invented to satisfy his daily needs.

There are four different types of pollution. Firstly, there is air pollution. Factories
and vehicles swallow oxygen, and their fumes poison the air with carbon dioxide (CO2)
which creates smog. As a consequence, pollutants in the air make it hard for people to
breathe causing lung and skin diseases. Also, when it rains, the chemicals in the air cause
acid rain hurting the animals and plants. Another effect is the expansion of the Ozone hole,
leading to more unfiltered ultra violet rays (UV rays) entering from the sun to earth. These
rays can cause skin rash and cancer.

Secondly, we have water pollution. Many factories dump their toxic waste in many
rivers and lakes, and ships spill oil in oceans and rivers, as a result, drinking water
becomes toxic and many aquatic animals and plants are dying in increasing numbers.

Thirdly, there is land pollution. This type results from people throwing away so
much garbage and not recycling most of it. Therefore, we have landfills growing in our
cities which result in the death of many animals and plants. In the countryside, the use of
fertilizers and pesticide sprays poison soil and water sources, and contaminate the food we
eat.

If nothing is done to stop pollution, most of us will die!
