B. Find the relative maximum and relative minimum of the function below using the First
Derivative Test and Second Derivative Test.
7. y = x 2−10 x+15
a. y = x 2−10 x+15
y’ = 2x – 10
b. y = 2x – 10
0 = 2x – 10
2x – 10 = 0
2 x 10

2 2
X=5
c. y = x 2−10 x+15
= (5)2−10(5)+15
= 25 – 50 + 15
= - 10
d. y = 2x – 10
= 2(4) – 10

y’’ = 2

(5, - 10) is a relative minimum

8. f (x) = x 3−3 x 2+ 4
a. f (x) = x 3−3 x 2+ 4
f’ (x) = 3 x 2−6 x
b. f’ (x) = 3 x 2−6 x
0 = 3 x 2−6 x
3 x 2−6 x=0
3 x2 6 x

6x – 10
6(0) – 10 = - 6
6x – 10
6(2) – 10 = 6
(0, 4) is a relative minimum
(2, 0) is a relative maximum
C. Solve for the following optimization problems.
9. The sum of two positive number is 28. What are they if their product is a maximum?
x + y = 28
y = 28 – x
P = xy
= x (28 - x)
= 28x - x 2

P = 28x - x 2
P’ = 28 – 2x

28 – x = 0
−2 x −28
=
2 2
x = 14

P’ = 28 – 2x
P’’ = -2
P’’ < 0

y = 28 – x
= 28 – 14
= 14

The two numbers are 14 and 14.

10. Find the dimensions of a rectangle with an area of 225cm2, whose perimeter is as
small as possible.
a. A = s2
A = area of the square
s = length of the side of a square

225cm2 = s2
√ 225 cm2 = √ s 2
15 cm = s
s = 15 cm

b. p = 4s
p = perimeter of the square
s = length of the side of a square
p = 4 × 15 cm
p = 60 cm
