INTRODUCTION

On the job training or OJT is one method by which students is given a chance to apply the
theories and computations that they have learned from the school. It also helps the students to acquire
relevant knowledge and skills by performing in actual work setting. Colleges and universities require their
students to undergo such training within a specific number of hours as part of the curriculum.

For the students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunities to go through the actual
methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipments and documents. In effect, the workplace
becomes a development venue for a student trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practice what
he has learn from academy.

On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companies who accept trainees.
First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for a lesser labor cost than a regular employee. Most of
them are all eager to learn the ropes so chances are high that they will cooperate.

Employers can use this internship strategy as a method in recruiting new employees. Since the
trainer or the supervisor can follow the trainees’ progress, he can gauge based on performance, behavior
and attitude if the trainee will make a good recruit after the completion of his internship.

OJT’s can bring fresh ideas into the organization. Given the opportunity to speak their minds
freely and without fear, they maybe able to contribute significantly in brainstorming sessions or research
and eventually help improve the organizations productivity. While training the interns, employers are in fact
also teaching their employees to process of guiding the trainees stretches their patience, develops teaching
skills and makes them more sensitive to the needs and mind set of the younger generation. The course of
supervision also teaches them how to share what they know and be receptive to questions. Hence, the
internship also becomes an avenue in training for future managers of the company.

Accommodating on-the-job trainees can truly be beneficial not only to the trainees but also to the
companies that provide opportunities for this type of learning. There is wisdom in the front lines. Such
training can be an investment that will be valuable to the company later on. This is also why trainees
should take their internship seriously as it can become a powerful tool and possibly even a source of
recommendation when they take that big lift from being students to career professionals.

COMPANY PROFILE

LRM Construction Company contracts with the fields of architecture and civil engineering,
construction is a process that consists of the building or assembling of infrastructure. Far from being a
single activity, large scale construction is a feat of human multitasking. The job is managed by a project
manager, and supervised by a construction manager, design engineer, quality engineer or project
engineer.

LRM Construction has already accomplished many projects in terms of vertical and horizontal
structures. They have been a contractor of Makati Development center for many years. One their project
is the ……?????

As of now their focus is all the horizontal structure which is water service connection from
Manila Water and land developing that was given to them by MDC.

EQUIPMENTS

Most of their equipments are from San Juan Quezon, City. There are three classifications for
equipments they are Metershop, Central and Stockyard. Metershop is for water meter, valve, strainer,
bolts and nuts. Central is for Tee, nipple, end cap, SCA, UCA Tapping tee, etc. And the Stockyard is for
huge materials.

PEOPLE

The abundant human resource in the Philippines, especially competent engineers and naval

CHAPTER 3

ON THE JOB TRAINING

This chapter narrates the activities that I had gone through during the training. This also includes
the observation, participation, interaction and challenges during their training.

This discusses its place as a development tool and how it was delivered effectively by the
company. On the job training is an important way in which students acquire relevant knowledge and skills
at work

NARRATIVE EXPERIENCE

Our OJT at LRM Construction makes us learn many things about our career. As we specialize in
the Horizontal structure which is pipe laying also known as New Water Service Connection.

I, Bryan Alexis Pasay, and Rose Angelica Acero was assigned in Pasig where we need to do the
Billing process and to demand payment of almost half a million pesos in Manila Water Company, Inc.

Manila Water company, Inc is a public utility company in the Philippines. Manila Water, as it is more
commonly known, is the East Concessionaire of MWSS (Metropolitan Water Works and Sewerage
System) during its privatization on August 1, 1997, with its counterpart Maynilad Water Services, Inc. as
the West Concessionaire. Manila Water is a subsidiary of Philippine conglomerate Ayala Corporation.

The first thing we learned is the familiarization of the equipments. The materials are use for
pipelaying and water connection.

This project is a closing one that’s why we start preparing the required papers which are
SUMMARY OF WORK ACCOMPLISHED, (METERING: NEW WATER SERVICE CONNECTION)
JOB ORDER/ ACCOMPLISHED REPORT, MATERIALS UTILIZATION REPORT & GOOD ISSUE
SLIP –for perusal.

It was April 15, 2011 when we first went at the Pasig Business Area located at Sta. Rosa Pasig.
We met Manila Water officials that we need to work with in order to accomplish the billing.

The Billing process has a routine path. First, it is check by Sir Pol Niog, The Zone Manager, if
the contractor measurement is match in the field. Then, forward to ma’am Liza and ma’am Beth for
Clarification and updates. Then to Ma’am Norma, the auditor, to clarify issues. And back to Sir Niog for
his verification and signature. Then forward to Sir Jerry Segurola and Sir Marvin Panday for approval of
the request of payment.

If it’s already approved by Sir Panday and has a voucher then we can forward to the main office
at Balara San Juan, Quezon City.

We also work for the 10 % retention billing under the said DMZ. It requires the billing number,
document number, period covered, gross amount, and net amount. Retention is 10 % of the net amount.
The Routine is first at Ma’am Liza, then forward to Sir Segurola and Sir Panday for approval. Then
Forward to the Main Office.
We look after the remaining balance and still need to be returned at the Main office so we
inventory the materials of P-14, P-15, P-25 and P-28. And as we see there are many missing materials and
that makes it worst.

OBSERVATION

We observed for almost 2 months the daily activities and practices that the workers inside the
company performed, as well as rules and regulation that all workers and employees must comply with.

We, as trainees are introduced as Civil Engineer. We need to deal with that in order to make the
workers or people around us to believe in our explanations and directions.

At the office of Pasig Business Area we observed that all workers inside the working zone must
wear their proper uniform during working hours. Even the sweeper or janitor who cleans the yard must
wear complete uniform.

Another thing that the trainee observed was the rules and regulation that the LRM Company
initiated. We learned to wear safety shoes, hard hat and uniform for safety reasons. Even in withdrawing
materials we still need to wear that because the San Juan management mandates so.

PARTICIPATION

We participated in the normal operation of the company by continuing the billing process in Pasig
and making inventory for the materials to be returned. We also do the daily check of the billing for us to
know the updates and improvement. Errors must be predict and must be solved before it happened. Any
missing details and papers may cause a long time clarification or cancelation of the payment.

INTERACTION

During the training at LRM Construction, I learned to interact with other people. I know that
people have different characteristics and attitudes; however, making friends with the trainee’s co-workers
doesn’t make difficult.

Even though I was only a trainee, they don’t treat me like others. And as a trainee, I don’t feel
uncomfortable as I worked with them. From the interaction I made with them, the later learned to work
with patience. Although thoroughly working on something was time consuming, the quality of the output
product is the most important. I also learned from all co-worker’s experiences and mistakes and apply
them whenever I needed it. The LRM officials also encouraged me to go on with my studies until I
become a professional.

Although I worked and interact with them for a short period of time, I learned a lot to them; the
skills and techniques that they shared with me that cannot be find on the books.

PROBLEM SET AND SOLUTION OFFERED

The problem we encountered during our training are related to the Billing process;

o The billings are being stocked with Sir Pol Niog, the Bussiness Zone Manager, for a long time.
o Sir Pol change the estimated amount to paid to contractor due to the error of pricing of groupings
for Tapping Tee. He said that “The price of the Tapping Tee must not be separated. It should be
added as one of the group.” So we just follow his given price.
o That there are many missing attachments in the billing, so we do check the papers and make
correction. And after that we forward it to ma’am Liza and Ma’am Beth, Manila Water officials,
for verification and clarification.
o P-28 Billing 4 is still missing and we need it to make MUR for Billing 4 & 5.
o There is no Job Order for P28 Billing 5 that’s why it is being returned. The LRM Staff said that
maybe it is in Billing 4 so we really need to find that.
o At the retention we encountered a missing document number so Ma’am Liza canceled it return
the papers so we look for the document number and add at the second retention.
o Some of the remaining materials have been missing. Many Angle valve that cost over P100, 000
has been steal or lost.
o The verification and clarification process in Pasig is vastly slow and our OJT time is not enough
to solicit all the payment.

CHAPTER 4

PERSONAL EVALUATION, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

At the end of the trainee’s OJT, I was able to learn the work of Civil Engineers. The training
served as the stepping stone for us to see the real life of an engineer. It served as the beginning the real
life of being an employee. I have realized that learning is a lifetime commitment that is continues even
you already have a job. The training gave me more initiative to my chosen career. I was more encouraged
to pursue the Civil Engineering course. The training inspired me to enhance my skills and knowledge in
the field of Civil engineering. I was given some ideas what could be the feeling or situation being an
employee. The training enriched my individuality as a beginner and created the foundation of being a
good worker. The best thing that I have gained inside the company was the good orientation of the person
having the higher positions.

As a Civil engineering student, the OJT made me realize the importance of the course that I am
taking. It made me realize the essential role of a civil engineer in a company. To be a competent one, not
only an engineer must understand the process and the underlying principles but also be knowledgeable of
the operation of certain equipments that carry out the process. An engineer must also possess good
communication and leadership skill.

CONCLUSION

I therefore conclude that in construction career there’s a lot of problem. But still there are still
many options to make up with the errors. I conclude that in doing a project the closing is the hardest
because it has many requirements for verification and clarifications. In fact our billing still ongoing and
were not sure if we can finished that before we end our OJT time. There are a lot of questions and
clarification and we conclude that we really know everything about the Pasig project so that we can
answer all the questions of Manila Water Officials.
I also conclude that even a simple problem may cause a big one, like what happen in the missing
angle valve. The delay of the payment is cause by those missing materials. If only the materials are
complete the billing process will be faster.
RECOMMENDATION

The company created a good service to their clients and gave the best training for the students.
The students must have a good company that would give them a good training ground and would enhance
their knowledge and capabilities. The school must have the good coordination for some companies that
offer an annual On the Job Training inside their company. The school should provide more budgets given
to the OJT coordinators to have the best monitoring of the training the students are taking. One of the best
ways of training is the provincial trainings that would give different experiences to the trainees. An out of
town training would give more self esteem to the students. The Civil engineering students have their
training during summer period of 4th year. For the company, they should give more lectures on the
technical parts of the company like Auto Cad and Mechanical Devices used by the Department.
