INTRODUCTION
On the Importance of Literacy and Numeracy

Having an acceptable level of level of literacy and numeracy can greatly improve many
factors including improvements to our social life, education and career prospects.

Literacy is the understanding, evaluating, using and engaging with written texts to
participate in society, to achieve personal goals and ambitions and to develop knowledge and
potential.

We are all required to be numerate in order to be able to maximize our potential and be
able to contribute effectively to the society. Numeracy skills in particular the ability to interpret
data and solve real life problems. An absence of mathematical confidence and poor numeracy
skills on the part of the students are obstructions in passing examinations and landing a better
job in the future.

Numeracy is defined as the ability to access, use and interpret and communicate
mathematical information and ideas, in order to engage in and manage in the mathematical
demands of various situations in adult years. To be numerate is to confidently and effectively
use mathematics to meet the everyday demands of life.

Literacy and numeracy help people gain the fundamental skills necessary to achieve
success in life.

On Getting Support

Hence, there is a huge school-wide strategy to improve literacy and numeracy and to
support struggling students to improve their mathematical skills. Literacy and numeracy skills
are crucial for accessing the broader curriculum because they are used in many aspects of our
lives.

This strategy was realized last October 1, 2018 when the students from Eastern Visayas
State University through its Mathematics Society called Math Wizards Club (MWC) of EVSU-OCC
offered a Numeracy Program to our Linao National High School students entitled: “ Literacy
Campaign: MWC-EVSU-OCC Numeracy Program “.This is also aligned with their university’s
thrust on adopting a high school for tutorials with the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED)
Mathematics Major.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing was done on October 2, 2018 with Mam
Rhoda V. Dinoy, School Principal II, Emeleen Con-ui, Head Teacher II, Mam Cynthia T. Yap, Math
Coordinator and Representatives from MWC-EVSU-OCC Ms. Liezel B. Mistola, MWC President
and Mia Jean S. Tajor. The agreement comprised the tutorial activities and numeracy campaign
of all EVSU Student Interns (BSED-MATH) and conduct of review and research activity on the
improvement of Mean Percentage Score (MPS) and Passing Rate to all grade levels from Grade
7 to Grade 10.

On Brigada Eskwela 2019 Numeracy Program

After the conduct of Second Quarter Numeracy Test of All Math teachers in Linao
National High School, the Mean Percentage Score (MPS) of the students are very low especially
in Grade 7 Sections. All Grade 7 Sections combined total MPS in Operation (Addition,
Subtraction, Multiplication, Division) is 43% and combined MPS for Problem Solving is 37%.
Other Grade levels also registered a less than 75% MPS in both Operations and Problem
Solving.

This report became the basis of EVSU -OCC Math Wizards Club to intervene and assist
our school in the conduct of the program: Math Wizards Club (EVSU -OCC) Numeracy Program
in Linao National High School”.

The program started by the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between two
parties: Linao National High School and Math Wizards Club of EVSU-OCC. The school was
represented by Mam Rhoda V. Dinoy (Principal), Mam Emeleen A. Con-ui (Head Teacher) ,
Mam Cynthia T. Yap ( Math Coordinator) , Mr. Jonathan G. Basmayor ( Math Club Co-Adviser)
and Ms. Liezel B. Mistola (MWC President) together with Ms. Mia Jean Tajor (MWC Club
Officer). This was done last November 12, 2018 at the Principals Office. Both parties agreed all
the terms stipulated in the MOA. Bottomline is to increase the Numeracy rate of Linao
National High School.

The MWC Members usually Linao Observers and Practice teachers were also involved in
the said program. The schedule of tutorial will be per classes by using flashcards with 1 -10
items of the four fundamental operations and charts for problem solving. For other MWC
Members they conducted tutorials every 4:00-5:00PM everyday depending on their vacant
time. The program lasted on February 2019 or about three (3) months in preparation for the
Post-test on March 12, 2019.

Meanwhile, some EVSU practice teachers guided selected Grade 10-STE Students in the
conduct of Action Research titled: Tutoring: A Factor Affecting Students’ Performance in
Numeracy Test”. The main purpose of the research was to investigate the performance of the
Grade 7 Students on the Pre-test and Post-Test of the Numeracy Test using the statistical
instrument from Ormoc City Division SY 2017-2018 Test paper.

After all the data has been gathered by the researchers, it was concluded that the Grade 7
students have enough prior knowledge on the concepts and skills of the numeracy test.
Secondly, the performance of the students in the Pre-test and Post-Test showed an improved
result. Lastly, the tutorial activity provided by the MWC students and Select Grade 10 students
has a significant effect on the performance of Grade 7 students in taking the numeracy test.

March 12, 2019 was the Post-Test of the Ormoc City Division Numeracy Test. The result
showed an increase of MPS from the Pre-test. MPS for Grade 7 students in Operation was 82%
(from Pre-Test of 43%) and 78% in Problem Solving (from originally 37%).Other good results are
as follows:
 Grade 8 – Operation : 93% from 55% ; Problem Solving : 90% from 63%
 Grade 9 - Operation : 94% from 67% ; Problem Solving : 90% from 58%
 Grade 10 - Operation : 98% from 71% ; Problem Solving : 95% from 67%
Indeed, the intervention of the Math Wizards Club of Eastern Visayas State University –
Ormoc City Campus (EVSU-OCC) together with the teachers and students of Linao National High
School was effective way of increasing the performance and interest of students in
Mathematics.
Special review and tutorial services during the Brigada Eskwela from May 20-25, 2019
enable our advanced students to review for Math Contests next year and for struggling
students prepare for the next school year 2019. Because of that, the program and the MOA will
continue until next school year and the next succeeding years.

Thank you and God Bless MWC-EVSU-OCC!
