Line of Symmetry

Mathematics, level: 3-5

Subject: Math Teacher: Angela Dimassi

Topic: Symmetry Grade level: Third grade
Duration: 50 minutes  Date: 27/05/2020

Materials Required:

- Precut regular shapes

- School Book
- Scissors
- Mirror
- A4 Lebanese flag
- Laptop
- LCD
- White Board
- Board marker

Concepts Taught: Symmetry

Strategies used:
- Cooperative learning
- Think pair share
- Psychomotor skills used to learning

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

- Find the axis of symmetry of a given figure.
- Complete the drawing of a given figure with an axis of symmetry.
- Analyze geometric figures and pictures in order to identify and describe
symmetry.
- Use your body parts (hands) to apply symmetry
- Identify the symmetric in a Lebanese Flag.

Introduction: (2min)
Teacher says “today our lesson is about symmetry. You (students) should
remember this lesson from the last year. Today we are going to find the
axis of symmetry of a given figure and complete the drawing of a given
figure with axis of symmetry. And let them watch the video.

Activities:

1. Review identifying congruent figures [congruent figures are figures with
the same shape and same size]. Have a student put his/her palms
together. Have a volunteer describe the hands {have same shape and
same size]. Post on board shapes with and without a line of symmetry
(8 min)

2. Have the children cut out symmetrical figures or draw the line of
symmetry ex. Lebanese flag, Heart, diamonds---explain to the children that
figure is symmetric because the 2 halves of the figure are congruent. The
folded line is the line of symmetry. (5 min)

the shape can have more than 1 line of symmetry e.g. circle folded in
different direction can have multiple lines of symmetry.

TEACHER Directed:
The teacher states “symmetry is like a mirror. Where a shape becomes
exactly like the other if you flip slip or turn it”. You can show the students
their reflection on a mirror. (Real life link)
Then
Have students identify the line of symmetry. Distribute pre-cut regular
shapes and letters [B, H, E, D, C]. Teacher will direct students to fold the
polygon by folding the corners and edges together to form a straight
crease. Have the students traced the crease and that line is the line of
symmetry. For the letters, have the students fold the letters horizontally to
form symmetric parts. (10 min)

Application:

Solve exercise 1 from the school book. (5min)

Teacher moves between students to see if student solving correct.

Activity: 3 (10min)

Objective: To draw the symmetric of the figure.

Materials: papers, pencils
Procedure: Have students’ work in pairs. Have one student draw half of a
figure and a partner draw the other half to make the figure symmetric.

Closing activity: (5 min)

Materials: cards containing figures some are symmetrical while others are
not.
Procedure: students are chosen randomly by turn to pick up a card and
weather the figure is cut by an axis of symmetry or not.

Application: (remaining time)

Solve exercises 2,3,4,6 p: 17 from school book.

What is left, is taken as a homework
