The Perimeter

Mathematics, level: 3-6

Subject: Math Teacher: Mariam Santina

Topic: Perimeter Grade level: Fifth grade
Duration: 55 minutes  Date: 20-12-2016
Materials required: pencil, ruler, meter stick, papers
Concepts Taught: Perimeter of a square, rectangle, and polygons

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:

 Discover the perimeter’s rule of square and rectangle.

 Calculate using the rule, the perimeter of a square given its side length.
 Calculate using the rule, the side length of a square given its perimeter.
 Calculate using the rule, the perimeter of a rectangle given its length and width.
 Calculate one of the dimension of the rectangle given its perimeter and the other
dimension.

Prerequisites:
 Using the ruler to measure a length of a line.
 Properties of a rectangle (2 equal lengths, 2 equal width).
 Properties of a square (4 equal sides).
 The perimeter of a polygon is equal to the sum of the length of segments of its sides.
 Multiplication Table of 4 & 2.
 Division by 4 & 2.

Teaching Strategies:
 Group work (group of 2)
 Students will discover the rule.
 Inductive method from specific to general.
Introduction: (10 min)
 I will declare the classroom regulations that I want them to apply during the class.
 I will tell the students that I will give you a reward if you help me in the class and apply
the regulations (stickers).
 Revise the properties of square and rectangle.
 Revise the relation between multiplication and addition (multiplication is repetitive
addition)
Ex: 4 +4 = 4×2 and 3+3+3+3=3×4
 Revise the relation between multiplication and division
Ex: 4×3=12 → 12÷4=3

Activity1 :( 30 min)

Objectives:

 Discover the perimeter’s rule of a rectangle.

 Calculate using the rule, the perimeter of a rectangle given its length and width.
 Calculate one of the dimension of the rectangle given its perimeter and the other
dimension.

Materials: White Board, Markers, Papers, Meter stick.

Procedures:
Start by story that (I want to know how many meters of ribbons do I need to cover the 4 sides
of the bulletin boards with ribbons).

Then ask the students question: How could you find out the length of ribbons?

>>Expected answer: Measure the sides.

Yes, the measure of the sides is the perimeter.

You took the perimeter in grade 3 and you should remember that the perimeter is equal to the
sum of length of the sides.

>>I measure the sides of the bulletin board and add them.

*Ask students to find a rule for these perimeters using the properties of rectangle and I give
them papers to help them find the rule (working in group of 2).
Papers are distributed to the students (pair groups) have the following:

Length

Width Width

Length

Perimeter= …….. + …….. + ……..+ ……..

Perimeter= ……..×…….. + …….. × ……..

Students must solve it in 5 minutes

*Teacher moves between students to see if students are solving it right.

Then ask some students to come to the board and tell us what they did and solve the sheet
together at the board .Now I give an example to solve on the board:(Rectangle with 3 cm width
and 5 cm length . Calculate the perimeter.)

I work with the students on the rule to make them know how to calculate the width or the
length of rectangle.

Perimeter=2×Length + 2×width

Length= half perimeter – width

Width=half perimeter-length
Activity 2:10min

Objectives:

 Discover the perimeter’s rule of square.

 Calculate using the rule the perimeter of a square given its side length.
 Calculate using the rule the side length of a square given its perimeter.

Materials: White Board, Marker, Papers.

Procedures:
Give students papers with this activity to find the rule

Side

Side Side

Side

Perimeter=……+……+……+……

Perimeter= ……×……

Side = ……÷……

*Teacher moves between students to see if students are solving right.

Solve the sheet on the board and give example to solve on the board (A square with side
length=4 cm. Calculate its perimeter.)

Closure: (5min)
 Summarize what we did today in our session.
 Solve the assessment sheet to check if the students get the idea of the lesson.
Assessment Work Sheet:
Name: Date:
Perimeter of square=4 × Side Perimeter=2×length + 2× width

Side=Perimeter of square ÷ 4 length=half perimeter-width

Width=half perimeter - length

Exercise 1:
A square with perimeter = 36 cm
Find the side length of the square.

Exercise 2:

6 cm

3 cm

Find the perimeter of the rectangle.

Exercise 3:
a) A rectangular garden has a width of 8 meter and a length of 3 meter. Find the perimeter of
this garden.

b) The width of a rectangle is 3 meter less than its length. The perimeter of the rectangle is 26 meter.
What is the width of the rectangle?
