METHODOLOGY FOR MANUFACTURING AND DRIVING OF PRE-CAST RCC PILE

SECTION - 1: CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS FOR PRE CAST PILE

Materials and workmanship for concrete, reinforcement and concrete ancillaries will comply with the
requirements of specification.

SECTION - 2: CASTING YARD FOR PILES

The casting yard for piles will be selected close to the site of driving.

Adequately compacted free draining flat ground suitable to provide safe unyielding support to the pile will be
prepared.

Pile bed will be prepared by brick soling overlain by smooth finish cement mortar to sustain load from completed
pile as per drawing.

SECTION - 3: FORM WORK FOR PILES

The pile form will be made of 1.8mm thick steel plates, flat bars, angle sections to produce pile sections
conforming to the requirements of specifications.

Sufficient sets of bottom shutter and side shutter will be provided.

All formwork shall be thoroughly cleaned and oiled by form oil before fixing.

All joints of pile form will be sealed with adhesive tape or puttying.

SECTION - 4: REINFORCEMENT FOR PILES

All re-bars will be cleaned of rust and mill scale by means of wire brushes.

Re-bars will be straightened out and cut by use of cutting machine or by the use of hammer and chisel. They will be
bent by use of the bending machine or manually by steel clamp handle to provide re-bars in accordance with the
bar bending schedule referred to on the shop drawing.

The re-bars will be properly tightened with annealed mild steel binding wire of 1.6 mm diameter, in accordance
with specification.

Distance pieces and spacer bars will be used to keep the reinforcement in the correct position.

SECTION - 5: PILE CONCRETING

The pile concrete will be placed in one continues operation from one end to the other.

The concrete will be thoroughly compacted by a hand held nozzle poker-vibrator which shall be used at the rate of
one vibrator per 4 m3 of concrete placed per hour.

The exposed face of the wet concrete will be finished with a wooden float to produce a smooth dense surface.

The casting will be marked upon the upper face of each finished unit.

Spare vibrators will be kept available during pile casing.

The piles will be kept wet by a combination of spraying water on covered Hessian for up to 20 days as specified.

One set of 6 cubes per 10m3 of concrete for each mix produced will be stored, in similar condition to the pile, for
testing at 7 and 28 days.

After 10 days curing or achievement of the concrete strength required for lifting the pile will be removed from the
formwork.

Upon removal from the casting yard, piles will be scaled by marking with plastic paint at 250 mm intervals.

The scaled piles will be stacked on supports placed on the predetermined, marked stacking points.

SECTION - 6: PILE HANDLING, PITCHING AND DRIVING.

50 Ton capacity Crawler Crane with 24m boom and 34m long pile leader attachment shall be used for handling,
pitching, driving up to 20 m piles.

The boom length and leader length shall be adjusted for handling and pitching of piles of different length.

K-35 diesel hammer of ram weight-3500 Kg, operating weight- 8300kg., energy- 10500 kg.m or equivalent shall be
used for driving piles into the ground to the ground to the final depth as specified in the drawings.
Two points lifting at 0.21 L from pile head and toe level of piles or one point lifting at 0.29 L from head of piles as
per drawing shall be adopted.

50/75 KVA generator shall be sued for power supply.

Driving records of each of piles shall be recorded and supplied to the Engineer. These records shall include:

i) Date on which the pile was cast.

ii) Final location of the pile.

iii) Date and time of driving and re-driving of pile.

iv) Number of the pile.

v) Weight of the pile.

vi) Length of the piles.

vii) Weight & drop of the hammer.

viii) The number of blows per 250 mm of penetration over the last 3m driving.

ix) The number of blows per 25mm of penetration over the last 250mm of driving.

x) Name and signature of the recorder and witness.

After the driving of piles, the pile top will be exposed by excavating earth around it.

A platform will be placed centrally on top of the pile and gunny bags filled with soil shall be placed o the platform
so that the load on top of the pile is twice that of design load by hydraulic jack.

Axial compression tests by maintained load procedures will be made on two of the piles as selected by the
Engineer.

For this purpose methods described in the Institution of Civil Engineers Specification for piling (Thomas Telford
Ltd., London, 11988) will be followed.

SECTION - 8: SERVICE PILES

After extracting all necessary information from the load test, the result will be used to place the service piles
according to the drawings for drawings for driving into the ground.

SECTION - 9: QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAMME FOR PILE DRIVING

Verticality of pile will be continuously checked. To ensure driving of piles to plumb, two theodolites placed at right
angles shall be used top observe correctness of pile driving of plumb.

The pile driving area will be compacted, leveled for free draining to ensuring smooth movement of pile
frame/crane and maintain verticality of pile frame/crane.

All pile points will be located by permanent pages on the ground and checked from time to time and prior to
pitching of individual pile from external reference points.

Approved form oils will be applied to shutter after each concreting operation.
