Failures of the Garment Rack

Failure 1: Stability of the Garment Rack.

Based on the product our group chose, it can be shown that the Garment Rack has a small base
area and it is built with adjustable height. When the Garment Rack is positioned with higher
height with a small base area, the center of gravity will shift from lower position to higher
position. With a higher position of center of gravity, the stability of the Garment Rack will also
lower down which explains why the Garment Rack will topple when external forces are applied
to it. Besides that, different reaction force acting on each wheel is also one of the factor which
makes the Garment Rack topples.

Failure 2: Total moment about the center of gravity is not equal to zero when forces are applied.

Another failure of the Garment Rack we chose is it falls off easily when excessive force is
applied. The weight of the Garment Rack itself is too small as compared to the external force
applied to it. Therefore, net moment existed when the total moment about the center of gravity is
not zero as well as this will lead to change in center of gravity. Apart from that, the aluminum
hollow tubes unable to withstand the uneven external forces acting on the tubes is also one of the
reason why would the Garment Rack topple easily.
