CHAPTER II. FORCES IN EQUILIBRIUM

Homework no. 02
Answer the following problems and questions in a clean sheet of bond paper. Show
your necessary solutions and illustrations and box your final answers. Make sure to indicate
the necessary units and use 4 decimal places. Take a clear picture of your output and send it
to your instructor through private message.

1. The following three forces act on a body located at the origin. F1 = 200 m/s, 30 above
positive x-axis; F2 = 300 m/s, 45 above negative x-axis; F3 = 155 m/s, 53 below
negative x-axis.
a. Find the x and y components of each of the three forces.
b. Use the method of rectangular resolution to find the resultant of the forces.

2. The resultant of four forces is 1000 N in the direction 30° West of North. Three of the
forces are 400 N, 60° North of East, 200 N South, and 400 N 53° West of South. Find the
rectangular components of the fourth force.

3. A weight is connected to a corner of room using two cables. The first cable is connected
horizontally with the wall and the other cable connected to the ceiling in an angle of 45 0.
Calculate the tension on both cables if the weight is 40 kg.

4. A safe weighing 2000 N is to be lowered at constant speed down a skid 4 m long, from a
truck 2 m high.
a. If the coefficient of sliding friction between the safe and skids is 0.3, will the safe
need to be pulled down or held back?
b. How great a force parallel to the skids is needed?
