Supporting and Locating Principles 111

Workholding in Manufacturing

Describe workholding.

Workholding is the process of locating, supporting, and clamping a workpiece for a manufacturing process, such as machining
or assembly. Proper workholding increases production rates, improves part quality, and ensures accurate and functional finished
parts.

Workholding devices can be divided into two general categories: standard workholding devices, such as chucks and vises, and
fixtures, which are customizable workholding devices made from sets of modular components. Fixtures are used in operations
involving irregularly shaped parts and strict workpiece tolerance. Fixtures also hold parts more securely, allowing for increased
manufacturing speeds and feeds, which can improve production rates. Standard workholding devices are easier to use as they
have an uncomplicated setup consisting of one or two components, while fixtures have more components and a range of setup
options.

Fixtures require a design phase to determine how best to arrange their different components. Fixture designers must understand the
underlying principles of locating, supporting, and clamping to properly select and position fixture components.
