    Root hair cells on plant roots have a large surface area that allows them to absorb more water from the soil through osmosis. The water is transported up through the xylem vessels to the leaves, where it evaporates from leaf surfaces through transpiration. This causes more water to rise up from the roots to the leaves to replenish the water lost from transpiration.
