What is Physics?
The word science originates from the latin verb Scientia meaning 'to know'.

Science is a systematic attempt to understand natural phenomena in as such

detail and depth as possible, and use the knowledge so gained to predict,
modify and control phenomena.

Science is ever dynamic.

Physics comes from a Greek word meaning nature.

Mathematics is the language of physics.

Physics is concerned w/ the basic rules which are applicable to all domains of
life. Revealing these laws of nature from the observed events is physics.

What is reductionism?
A related effort is to derive the properties of a bigger, more complex,
sysytem from the properties and interactions of its constituent simpler parts.
This approac is called reductionism.

Scope and Excitement of Physics

We can get some ideas of the scope of physics by looking as its various sub-
discplines.

Basically there are two domains and interest: macroscopic and microscopic

macroscopic
-phenomenon at lab
-terrestrial
-astronomical scales

microscopic

physical world 1
-atomic
-molecular
-nuclear

Physics, Technology and Society

Sometimes technology gives rise to new physics, at other times physics
generates new technology.

physics is the study of nature and natural phenomenon.

Fundamental Forces in Nature

Gravitational Force

physical world 3
The gravitational force us the force of mutual attraction b/w any two
objects by virtue of their masses. It is a universal force.

Every object experiences this force due to every other object in the
universe

It plays a key role in the large-scale phenonmena of the universe, such as

formation and evolution of stars, galaxies and galactic clusters.

Electromagentic Force

Eleectromagenteic force is the force b/w charged particles.

does not need any intervening medium.

It is enormously strong compared to gravity.

Electromagentic force governs the structure of atoms and molecules.

E.F can be attractive and repulsive.

Strong Nuclear Force

The strong nuclear force binds p and n in a nucleus.

The strong nuclear force is the strongest of all fundamental forces

It is charge independent and acts equally b/w a p and p, a n and n and p

and n.

It is reponsible for the stability of nuclei.

Weak Nuclear Force

The weak nuclear force appears only in certain nuclear processes sch as
the β-decay of nucleus.

in β-decay the nucleus emits and e and uncharged particle called

neutrino.

Nature of Physical Laws

physical world 4
The concept of energy is central to physics and the expressions for energy
can be written for every physical system.

The general law of conservations of energy is true for all forces and for any
kind of transformation b/w diff. forms of energy.

Energy is a scalar quantity. really scalars.

But all conserved quantities are not necessarily scalars.

Symmetries of space and time and other abstract symmetries play a central
role in modern theories of fundamental forces in nature.
