LINGUA INGLESA 2 (2017/2018)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FINAL WRITTEN EXAM

DATES:

- Second opportunity: 4th July 2019, 16:00. Rooms C05-C12.

PART 1. USE OF ENGLISH TEST: GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY, LISTENING & READING (1:30 hours approx.)

1) GRAMMAR

 CONTENTS:
- The exam will basically focus on the grammar topics dealt with in class and in the Campus Virtual. See corresponding
units from Murphy’s English Grammar in Use; also check the Unlock coursebook (Language development and Grammar
for writing sections in Units 6-10). Grammar topics covered:

- Additionally, you should revise all the other contents in Hewings’ grammar, particularly those topics that you find
especially difficult (remember you should prove that you have reached the B2 level!!).
- Remember the importance of revising your grammar: your grammar problems are not only relevant in your grammar
test, but they will be also a handicap in your writing and speaking tests!!

 FORMAT: the exam will include exercises similar to the ones done in class. Types of exercises which may appear in the
exam:
o Fill in the gaps
Examples:
a) Complete the following sentences with the correct form of the verb (-ing or (to) + infinitive)
 Ben is thinking of (move) __________________ to Vigo.
b) Complete the sentences with the correct future form of the verb in brackets:
 I (meet) __________________ my Skype couple for the first time tomorrow.

o Correct the mistake


Example:
a) Correct the mistake or put a  if the sentence is already correct.
 He told I was his friend.
o Transformations of different types (with a key word and an initial word; with only an initial word, etc; from
active to passive or viceversa; from direct speech to reported speech or viceversa; combining clauses using a
relative pronoun).
Examples:
a) Complete the following sentences so that they mean the same as the original sentence, starting in the
way given.
 She did not do any work at school, and now she regrets it.
If she________________________________________________________ sorry now.
b) Use between 2 & 5 words to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first
sentence. Use the word between brackets to complete each sentence. Do not change the word given.
 'Can you lend me your car, Lee?', asked Cris. (borrow)
Cris asked ___________________________________________________ his car.
o Multiple choice (in this type of exercise WRONG ANSWERS WILL BE PENALISED)
Example:
Circle the correct or most likely alternative
 I advised Joe to put/putting/should put an advertisement for his new shop in the local paper.

2) VOCABULARY:
 CONTENTS
All the vocabulary covered in units 6-10 of Unlock and in the other activities carried out in class. You may use the class
Glossary to help you prepare this part.

 FORMAT: one of the following


o Multiple choice
o Match words with definitions.
o Write the term for the following definition.

3) READING: the format will be either


o Multiple choice.
o True or False.
o Match paragraphs with headings or summaries.
o Cloze text

4) LISTENING: the format will either


o Multiple choice.
o True or False.
o Sentence completion.
o Matching speakers with statements.

PART 2: WRITING (1:30):


a) Essay
 For the Writing part of the final exam, you will have to write an essay of about 150-200 words.
 The essay will be about one of the following topics:
- the environment
- architecture
- art
- Ageing
- Feminism
- Brexit
We have discussed these topics thoroughly in class. Thus, going over your notes, textbooks (see Unlock units 6-10) and previous
essays might help you come up with ideas.
