CFM56-5B lubrication unit – best practices
Lube unit drain plug installation
• Prior to re-installing oil filter drain plug, follow AMM procedures
– Install black o-ring in oil filter cover recessed groove
– If needed, install green back-up o-ring on drain plug stem

• Do NOT install black o-ring on drain plug stem

• After installation and torque of oil filter drain plug

– If green back-up seal is visible, inner o-ring miss-installation is possible
– Corrective Action: remove plug & inspect

• After removal of drain plug

– If black o-ring sits on back-up seal, previous o-ring miss-installation is possible
– Corrective Action: remove & discard black o-ring from drain plug stem, install new black o-ring in
oil filter cover recessed groove

Troubleshooting
Best Practices

27 / CFM Proprietary Information subject to restrictions on the cover

CFM56-5/5B typical troubleshooting process
Airline engineering/ MOC team notified of anomaly
• ECAM warning (class 1) or ECAM flashing STS light (class 2)
– NO GO fault set or requires Mx action within 10 days
• Flight crew report
• CFM Diagnostics CNR

Step 1: Obtain proper maintenance data via MCDU/airn@v

• Post Flight Report (PFR) : Combines aircraft ECAM and recorded engine faults
Step 2: Review Airbus AMM & TSM for engine faults associated with reported
anomaly
Step 3: Create Engineering Order (EO) for Line Maintenance Team
Step 4: Line Mx team uses TSM to correctly identify LRU for removal
• A/C then dispatched
28 / CFM Proprietary Information subject to restrictions on the cover CFM56 Symposium – June 2018 – Las Vegas
ECAM warnings also carry engine faults

Step 1 : Crew observes ECAM

Step 2 : Maintenance team obtains PFR
Step 3 : PFR reviewed
- find engine fault with same
GMT time stamp/PH as ECAM

29 / CFM Proprietary Information subject to restrictions on the cover CFM56 Symposium – June 2018 – Las Vegas
ECAM “ENG 1/2 COMPRESSOR VANE”
• ENG 1/2 COMPRESSOR VANE ECAM warning has 6 possible PFR engine faults

• Each PFR engine fault has different fault class and troubleshooting actions
• VSV actuator sensor, harness
• VBV position sensor, harness
• Harness, HMU VSV torque motor
• Harness, HMU VBV torque motor
• VSV actuation, HMU
• VBV actuation, HMU

• Examination of PFR leads to proper troubleshooting with TSM

• TSM instructions insures proper LRU removal

“Start troubleshooting” option (AirNav)

Step 1 : Choose/click “Start Troubleshooting”

Step 2 : Choose/click “ECAM Warnings”
Step 3 : Type ECAM warning into “Message Box”
then click on “Search”
Step 4 : Highlight engine fault that is on PFR
then click on “Open”

Troubleshooting option (AirNavX)

Step 1 : Choose/click “airnavX”

Step 2 : Enter A/C type & Tail # (shows yellow)
Step 3 : Type ECAM warning into “Description”
then click on “magnifying glass”
Step 4 : Engine faults shown WITH TSM TASK

Summary of FADEC system investigations
• Maintenance actions determined by fault class
• PFR important to understand components that need investigating
• Troubleshooting methodology involves all LRU components of engine faults
• Correct identification will eliminate repeat faults and D&C’s
• Maintenance plan required for investigation of long term engine faults
(SMR) per Airbus MPD
• Utilize AMM & TSM for guidance
