MIND YOUR HABITS

A SOCIAL MEDIA BASED PROJECT THAT ADVOCATES AWARENESS ON HABITS AND ITS
UNDERLYING ESSENCE ON ONES LIFE

BACKGROUND:

The American Journal of Psychology (1903) defines a habit as a more or less fixed way of
thinking, willing, or feeling acquired through the previous repetition of a mental experience. Much of our
daily lives are taken up by habits that we’ve formed over our lifetime. Habits emerge through associative
learning and studies shows that about 40 percent of people daily activities are performed each day in
almost the same situations. However our minds don’t always integrate in the best way possible. Even
when you know the answers you can’t make yourself change the habitual behavior because often time’s
habits function largely outside of awareness.

Human habits are considered to be an important root of societal problems such as health and
climate change (Gifford, 2011; Kelly &Barker, 2016). Study also suggest that duality of the goal and
habit systems also pertains to sequences of motor movement, such as repeatedly pressing a left and right
key in response to stimuli (Yin & Knowlton, 2016) which only means that habits operate independently
of goals not only in single motor movements but also in decision making, action selection and execution.

Habits take place throughout every age, as our society is progressively being liberated and being
brainwash to different concepts of life through various media platforms, people simply accept this as the
norm without even assessing the negative effects on their mental health. Without knowing why people
scroll on their smartphone for hours, or why someone feels weak after a bunch of internet videos, people
often times feel left out and depressed that greatly impacts on how they view life.

As someone who is concern how his life will turn out due to the bad habits he’s done in the past,
MIND YOUR HABITS has been implemented as catharsis towards a new meaning. A media-based
project focusing on the underlying benefits of habitual cues as well as awareness on the destructive habits
that leads to addiction.
