1.3 SMALL CAPACITY OVER HEAD SERVICE RESERVIORS (OHSR’S).
To cover smaller habitations, smaller capacity OHSRs with lower staging are proposed
under this category. Only 2 capacities (50KL & 75KL) are propose
d to consider for 15 M different SBC (7.0, 10.0 & 18.0 T/Sqm) and different seismic
zones (II, III & IV). Total 18 no's of overhead service reservoirs are proposed to be constructed for
Rural water supply schemes under PHED, Rajasthan. Details of these OHSRs are given in following
table: -

Figure 1 Rajasthan Seismic Zone Map showing different zones boundaries and their areas
As per the above figures the following project area falls under the seismic zone-II also,
all the headwork’s and OHSRs locations are within it. Therefore seismic Zone has been adopted as
Zone-II.
The seismic calculations will be computed as per I.S. 1893 Part-I -2002 & Part-II-2014 or as per latest
amended, taking into consideration soil foundation system, importance factor as 1.5 and basic
horizontal seismic coefficient/ seismic zone factor & average acceleration coefficient as appropriate
to the type of structure.
Parameters Values
Seismic zone II TO IV
Zone factor (Z) 0.10 TO 0.24
Importance factor (I) (To be chosen 1.5
from table 7 of IS
1893(Part 1):2016 based on type of
structure)
Response Reduction Factor (R) For the water Retaining structures “R” shall be taken as
2.5 for above ground structures and 4.0 for
underground structure. The value of “R” for partially
underground structure shall be taken by interpolation
of above values.
For general structures i.e. Buildings, Pump Houses. The
value of “R” shall be taken 3.0.

For Temporary structures 0.71
For Boundary wall 0.71
Terrain, height and structure size factor K2
Category 2, Class A (building/structure length less than 20m length in 1
longer direction)
Category 2, Class B (building/structure length from 20m to 50m length 0.98

As per the above figure the basic wind speed for the project area is been adopted as 47 m/sec.
Wind loads will be as per I.S. 875. Part 3 or as per latest amended. The basic design
wind speed of Jaipur as per the code is 47m/sec.

Figure 3 Load Combinations to be adopted.
Earthquake is not likely to occur simultaneously with wind, either wind or earthquake
load shall be considered with dead loads & live loads. In case of structures bearing monorail loads,
live load shall include monorail loads also.
For liquid retaining structures the load combinations for design purposes shall be the one that
produces maximum forces and effects from the following combinations of loads,
1. Dead Loads + Live Loads.
2. Dead Loads + Live Loads + Seismic Loads.
3. Dead Loads + Live Loads + Wind Loads.
7. The staging part of the service reservoir would be checked for seismic and wind
separately.
8. The foundation would be designed as Raft footing (With hole and without hole) with
ring beam and the thickness of footing will be checked for bending moments due to
wind and seismic separately.
9. All the components with contact in water would be designed for serviceability with
max. crack width 0.2 MM as per the provisions of IS 3370.
5.1.1 METHODOLOGY FOR OHSR STRUCTURAL DESIGN:
Structural design of Overhead service Reservoir shall be done considering following
design criteria:
1. OHSR shall be designed for considering all the design criteria given in IS 3370 Part-II,
2009.
2. Latest revisions of the IS code i.e. IS 1893 Part-1: 2016, IS 1893 Part-2:2014, shall be
used while structural design of OHSR.
3. The OHSR shall be designed accounted for the different mode of earthquake force i.e.
impulsive mode and convective mode while designing the vertical wall of the tank and
the staging of tank.
4. The staging of the OHSR shall be designed for applying the resultant seismic force due
to water for impulsive and convective mode at the centre of gravity of tank.
5. The structural design of OHSR can be designed by the Conventional method or by
STAAD software.
8. For all design purpose SBC shall be taken as allowable SBC at 3.0 m depth or 10t/m2
whichever is lower.
9. Minimum free board for CWR shall be one foot (0.3mtrs) which will be taken as
difference of beam bottom level and the lip of the bell mouth of overflow pipe
installed in vertical axis.
10. Dead storage shall be considered 100 MM for all the Capacity of CWRs.
Table 9 Design Concrete Mix.
Note: - “If the contractor intends to use the Ready-Mix Concrete, the ratio of the mix like water
cement ratio, admixture content etc. shall be as per approved mix design.”
2. The minimum reinforcement for non-liquid retaining structures shall
be as per IS: 456.
Note: - Roof Slab of CWR i.e. (Flat Slab) & Sump’s Roof will be designed for Water and cover for
Roof Slab will be taken as 45 mm.
Classification of Types of soil for determination of increment in SBC has been done based on ‘N’
value. If the ‘N’ Value found less than 10, will be considered as soft soil. ‘N’ value 10-30 will be
considered as medium or stiff soil. ‘N’ value above 30 will be considered as Rock or Hard soil.
