CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Pechay (Brassica rapa) is one of the common leafy vegetables crops

grown in the Philippines belonging to family cruciferae. Vegetables

are important and substantial source of food that significant

contributes to the quality of our diet because it provides variety of

nutrients. Various parts of enumerable kinds of vegetables make meals

of staple food appetizing because of their flavoras and even pleasing

to the eyes. The major nutritional contribution of vegetables to the

human diet are vitamin A and C as source of iron and calcium needed by

the human body. Since our locality have a good and bountiful land

areas that can be planted by this plant, so researchers come up to

study the effectiveness of using rotten banana stem for the growth and

development of pechay plant. Students are going to determine the

lenght, width, number and height of leaves that wwill going to compare

to another pechay planted in an ordinary soil.

Researchers will attempt to discover and investigate what was the

effectiveness of using organic fertilizer which is rotten banana stem

because it has another nutrient that are going to be absorb by the

pechay plant. It will be easy for the farmers to use this kind of

fertilizer because our locality also has bountiful plantation of

banana’s.

Thre benefits of organic fertilizer is beneficial to pechay plant

since there is no bio-chemical elementsadded to it. Organic farmers


and gardening enthusiast that use of organic inputs is preferred due

to its chemical free and environment friendly attributes.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM


The general problem of the study is to determine the

effects of rotten banana stem as fertilizer to the pechay plant

Specifically, the study answered the following question:

1. What is the growth development of pechay plants planted in two

treatment in its:

1.1 length of leaves;

1.2 width of leaves;

1.3 number of leaves;

1.4 size of leaves
