Doppler Effect Problems

Mrs. Todd’s Physics Honors

vsound = 330 m/s @ 0°C ∆ vsound = 0.6 m/s per 0°C

1. A car moving at 72.0 km/h is sounding its horn as it approaches you. If

the actual frequency of the horn is 5.50 × 102 Hz, what frequency will you
hear at 25°C?

2. On a day when the temperature is 25.0°C, a child drops a stone into a well
that is 75.2m deep. How much time passes before the child hears the stone
hit the water?

3. When a person is standing still and a police siren is approaching the

person, what is the frequency of the siren if you hear a frequency of 600
Hz? The police car is moving with a speed of 20 m/s.

4. A car is driving toward an ambulance which is sounding its siren. If the

frequency of the siren is 30 Hz, the car is moving with a speed of 20 m/s,
and the ambulance is moving with a speed of 30 m/s, what frequency will
the person driving the car hear?

5. A car passes a police car, blaring its siren in an area where the temperature
is 100°F. Upon passing the police car, what is the frequency of thepolice
siren if the driver of the car observes a frequency of 25 Hz, the car is
traveling at 30 m/s, and the police car is traveling at 50 m/s?
