BCEE 344, Winter 2018, Assignment #1, Due: Monday, Feb 5, 2018, in class

Question 1
Compute the factored tensile resistance Tr for
the given tension plate connected to a gusset
plate using ten high-strength 7/8” (22-mm)
bolts as shown. Holes are drilled for the bolts.
Plates are made of G40.21 300W steel with
𝐹 = 345 𝑀𝑃𝑎, 𝐹 = 480 𝑀𝑃𝑎. The thickness
of the gusset plate is acceptable.

Question 2
Redesign the member of Example 3.2, Kulak’s book (Limit State Design in Structural Steel),
but, instead of using two angles, use two standard channels placed back to back, and,
instead of using one line of bolts, use two lines of bolts. Consider three bolts in each line 60-
mm on center.

Question 3
Given an 8-m tension member made of a double angle 2L152×102×9.5 connected to a 1/2”
(12-mm) gusset plate using six high-strength 3/4” (19-mm) bolts in two lines as shown
below. Holes are punched for the bolts. Compute the factored tensile resistance T r. Angles
are made of G40.21 300W steel with 𝐹 = 300 𝑀𝑃𝑎, 𝐹 = 440 𝑀𝑃𝑎. Check the slender
ratios; if not acceptable, provide a solution.
