Question 1
A C130x13 that is used as a tension member is going to be connected to a 10-mm gusset plate. The
factored axial forced applied to the channel is 400 kN. The channel and the gusset plate are made of
ASTM A992 with Fy = 345 MPa and Fu=450 MPa.

(a) Design a bearing-type bolted connection. Consider two lines of high-strength ¾ in. A325
bolts with Fu=825 MPa. Bolt threads are not intercepted by the shear planes. The holes are
drilled for bolts.
(b) Design a welded connection. Use fillet weld E4918 electrode with X u=490 MPa. Use a
transverse and two equal-length longitudinal welds.

Question 2
An S200×34 beam is connected to an HP310×110 column using two angles (web framing angles).
7/8-in. A325M bolts with 𝐹 = 825 𝑀𝑃𝑎 are used in a bearing-type connection. Bolt threads are
intercepted by the shear planes. The small eccentricity of load can be neglected in these kinds of
connections. The beam and column are made of A572 grade 50 steel with 𝐹 = 345 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and 𝐹 =
450 𝑀𝑃𝑎. Determine the number and arrangement of bolts required if the factored beam reaction is
220 kN. Use 2L76×76×7.9.

Question 3
Redo the class example (column base plates), but, use 𝑓 = 20 𝑀𝑃𝑎 instead of 𝑓 = 24 𝑀𝑃𝑎.

Question 4
Redo the class example (beam bearing plates), but, use:

 400 kN instead of 380 kN for the factored end reaction

 100 mm instead of 125 mm for the concrete bearing length
