Please provide a brief essay (500 words) describing your interest in human rights work.

1.1 meaning of Human Rights

The human rights are as old as the mankind. However, in the recent times their importance and relevance has
been well acclaimed. After the havoc created by the second world war period the need for prevalence and
acknowledgement of the human rights was felt and this need was fulfilled by the introduction of United Nation’s
Declaration of Human Rights in the year 1948.
According to me the definition of Human Rights are those rights which every man and woman are entitled to, in
any territory occupied by them by the virtue of being born as a human being. Human rights are those rights
which are exigent and cannot be ignored because of their very nature. Some of the characteristics of these rights
are mentioned below:
• Inalienability: Human rights are the part and parcel of the human beings as they are the ones which
guarantee a life which is more than the mere animal existence. Therefore, these rights are inalienable
from the human beings.
• Comprehensive nature: the human rights should ensure that they include within their ambit social,
political, economic and religious rights as well to ensure the right to live with dignity is guaranteed to
every person.
• Universality: there should be an element of universality in the human rights and they should be
acceptable to all the people irrespective of their nationality, religion, race, caste or any other
consideration as these rights are guaranteed because of the very existence of human beings and
therefore should be above any other consideration,
• Justifiability: human rights should be justifiable. The same has been provided under various articles of
the constitution of India.
• Non- absoluteness: the human rights should not be absolute in nature and certain reservations and
restriction could be imposed in their application. However, the same should be justified.

1.2 My experience in the field of human rights and legal services

As far as my previous experience in the field of human rights is considered, I would acknowledge the fact that I
have no previous experience in this field but would definitely like to assert my proclivity towards this field right
from my school days. Having a strong desire to uphold the human rights and serve the downtrodden and needy
people of the society is one of the reasons which drove me to choose law as a career option. I always feel that
Human rights is the base upon which stands the infrastructure of all other laws in the world as the ultimate goal
of any law is the betterment of the society.
From the first year of my college, I chose to become a member of the legal aid cell of my college and IDIA as a
member of material development. I am also looking forward to interning under various NGOs in order to
become a resource for the needy people in the due course of time. Through this internship I am eager to work in
different issues relating to the human rights and am open to the issues concerning any field of law and I am sure
I can work tirelessly and prove myself to be a worthy asset for your team.
