This document provides contact information and course details for an autonomous systems tutorial taught by Dr. Islam Khalil at German University in Cairo. The course assessment consists of a final exam, midterm, and a group project comprised of several milestones. Teams of 5-7 students must register for the project by February 15th. The introduction defines autonomous systems as operating without human interaction in unstructured environments to complete tasks like surveillance, search and rescue, or firefighting. It outlines key components for autonomous robots, including locomotion, localization, navigation, mapping, and control architecture.

Dr. Islam S. M. Khalil Autonomous Systems:Tutorial 1 4/8 Introduction Autonomous Systems are those which can operate in an unstructured environment to achieve a certain task without human interaction or intervention. where, the unstructured environment means without previous information about the surroundings.
Tasks required by autonomous systems can be
surveillance, search and rescue, fire fighting and demining. Dr. Islam S. M. Khalil Autonomous Systems:Tutorial 1 5/8 For Any Autonomous Robot (1) Locomotion: according to application define how the robot will be mobile; wheeled. legged (hexapod). flying (quad-rotor). Others. (2) Localization: defining exact location using: Encoders IMU: inertial measurement unit, accelerometer and gyroscope. GPS. Others.
(3) Navigation: detecting the surroundings.
