Guide to ear training

1. Using single white notes. Use instrument as a reference to find randomly selected notes.

2. Using single white notes try and guess the note by using the previous note as a reference.

3. Start clapping rhythms found in backing tracks or songs.

4. Try and sing or hum along to melodies and songs.

5. Identify whether notes are going lower or higher.

6. Listen to backing tracks or songs to hear how many instruments are playing.

7. Listen to backing tracks or songs to hear how many notes are being played.

8. Introduce black notes to include Sharps and Flats.

9. Start to identify sounds and distances by ear.

10. Using a backing track or song, try and work out the scale.

11. Using a backing track or song, try and work out the melody line.

12. Using a backing track or song, try and work out the chords.

13. Start identifying distances and notes with no reference.

14. Identify chord shapes and sounds by ear e.g. major, minor etc…

15. Identify scales and patterns by ear.

16. Gradually increase the difficulty of songs to include faster parts and more chords.

17. Work out an entire song by ear 100% note for note.
