I will, to the best of my ability, not to cheat in any way or form in this examination. In case of non-
compliance, I will accept an automatic grade of ZERO in this exam.

Directions: Each problem-solving question must be answered with complete solution with the correct units.
Incorrect units will be given zero points. No solution will likewise be given no point. Write your answer on the
space provided.

PART I: UNDERSTANDING THE TOPIC

Identify whether the following situations constitutes: (1pt each)
A. Both the statement and the reason are true
B. The statement is correct but the reason if false
C. The statement is incorrect but the reason is true
D. Both the statement and the reason are false

1. Prestressing is not a new concept, since it was used as early as 1872.

2. Using load balancing method in the determination of stresses at transfer condition will always give a
negative value of the couple arm “a”. It is due to the fact that at initial condition, gravity loads present at
that time is far less than the counteracting moment produced by the prestressing force and the eccentricity
“e”.
3. According to the Ten Principles taken from Abeles in Chapter 2, “You cannot have everything”. Because
each solution has advantages and disadvantages that have to be tallied and traded off against each other.
4. For post-tension beam, the total loss is the sum of Elastic Shortening, Steel Relaxation, Creep and
Shrinkage only. This is because there are no anchors and friction between the wire and the concrete under
the post-tension system.
5. Drying takes place first before plastic shrinkage. It is because the concrete dries up first before phasing to
plastic stage.

Derive the following using the parameters in each number: (5 pts each)

6. Formula for the balance

Method

PART II: PROBLEM SOLVING

Situation:
The prestressed beam (post-tensioned) as shown supports the loads of the bridge deck including the
moving load of a two-axle vehicle. The following are its properties:

f'c = 5000 psi f'ci = 0.60f’c fy = 60ksi

Eccentricity = 5in Aps = 10 – 1/2in Grade 270 fpi = 0.70fpu
fpy = 0.85fpu Deck Self-weight = 0.45psi Deck live load = 0.4psi
Center to center spacing of Friction factor = 0.30 Wobble Effect Factor =
beams = 20ft 0.0015/ft

7. Determine the maximum initial prestressing stress at the top and bottom part of the across the
beam (5pts each)
8. Determine the total loss on the system if Friction Loss and Anchorage Seating loss are the only
loss to be considered. Assume an anchor slip of 0.40in. (5 pts for each loss)
9. Determine the effective prestressing stress at the top and bottom part of the beam (5pts each).
Assume an ADDITIONAL LOSS due to elastic shortening, creep, steel relaxation, and
shrinkage of 20%.
