BARANGAY LIBAS

BARANGAY HISTORY
The name LIBAS originated from the name of a big tree located at the center of the
present site of Barangay Libas, Burauen, Leyte. During the colonization of the Philippines by the
Spaniards, Pueblos Barangay and Sitios were organized and built along the sea cost of the
Islands.

One of those Sitios was discovered in the interior part of Island of Leyte which they
called “ARMASIN” (meaning a trading place).

There was a time the granary of settlers in that place. Many people goint to the town of
Burauen pass by this Sitios to trade. But the trade on this Sitios did not last long due to the
frequent flooding of the Guinarona River on the Northern side. The settlers transferred to a
higher ground further from ARMASIN, here they found a big tree with spread branches called
“LIBAS” near a creek and spring. This become resting placed for the travelers were they could
quench their thirst during their journey. They found out that the placed was an ideal settlement
area were they later named “Libas-Libas Sapa”. Then they named their new settlement “LIBAS”
symbolized by the big tree.

Through the initiative of their leader DALMACIO CABUDOC, with the cooperative of
his members, they organized a barrio named Libas. They appointed him as their first Tenyente
Del Barrio in 1894. This barrio belonged to the Municipality of Burauen. Later on the local folks
built their first school building and hired a tutor from Tanuan, named Maestra Ceta to cater the
children’s education using Cartilla and Catan method. In 1937, Barrio Libas was given a one
room school building by the government catering to first and second grader. However closed
during the World War II started at the Pearl Harbor.

After the war when the American liberated our Country from Japanese colonizers, our
school reopened last December 1952 until the present completing the six grade elementary with

Barangay Maghubas

THE LEGEND OF BARANGAY MAGHUBAS

Maghubas, a very intriguing Barangay which was originally one of the sitios covered by
Paitan. At old those times, Pitan composed of three sitio namely: Sitio Moro Boro, Sitio Sulfo,
and Sitio Maghubas, after the liberation greater number of people came to live in southern part of
Paitan than the rest of the sitios. The original owner of this land were the family of Cartel,
Advincula, Bugho, Condo, and Pedro Merile which letter became the first Barangay Captain way
back 1959, the year when Maghubas created into a Barangay through a resolutions.

Moreover, Maghubas was ont only blessed with an Agricultural land but also with an
education pioneered by Mr. Eleuterio Tedios in the year 1961. He was a teacher in primary
grades who organized the institutions of learning by holding classes in the house of Pedro
Merile. The following year 1962, a new school with the effort of Mr. Vicente Pacala who
donated the lot for the school site with the help of various folks.

Years passed the Barangay gradually showed up its improvements the rough reads was
concentrated with the progressive administration of Marcos regime. It’s in the year 1973, a
residential subdivision was made and was named of its owner Luisa Pedregosa subdivision or
Maghubas Subdivision as it is commonly called now, But how Maghubas got its name.

Maghubas came from the word “HUBAS” in the boundary between Maabab and
Maghubas, there was creek arising from the small bodies of water coming from the different
areas of such place, fortunately the Cartel Family made a canal out of this creek which served an
irrigation system for the various ricefields of this agricultural Barangays, but a unique
phenomenon evolved, so that during sunny days system will not function unless the rainy days
will exist. This seasonal less of water is called “HUBAS” which later became Maghubas.
