The natural environment is rich in plants
and animals and world’s population
depends on the environment for their
food, medicines, raw materials and shelter
from natural elements. Aside from
providing basic needs, this resource plays
a very important role in the economic
activity of an area.
Nature itself is a source of beauty and a
work of art. In fact, it has been the source
of inspiration for artist through thousands
of years. Some people find cultural or
spiritual meanings to their environment,
whereas others simply find enjoyment in
nature.

Biodiversity can improve a person’s

well-being. Many people find comfort in
the presence of wildlife and healthy
habits. A rich biodiversity provides a
high quality environment and a better
atmosphere, reducing health costs
associated with pollution.
Scientist use the natural environment to
gather data and conduct researches that
benefit the society. Aside from enabling
the society to improve its knowledge of
the natural world, natural environment is
also a venue for learning. There are
lessons learned better outside the
classroom.
Ecosystem services refer to those natural
processes that provide benefits such as
climate control, pollution attenuation, air
and water purification, flood control,
nutrient cycling and soil formation.
Trees serves as filters which take out the
harmful pollutants in the air.

Major floods in many cities across the

globe have been attributed to forest
clearance. Vegetation on the banks of
rivers and lakes prevent soil erosion
caused by waver and surface water flow.
Mangroove forests likewise provide a
barrier along the coastline from crashing
waves to avoid erosion.
Biodiversity has important benefits to
agriculture such as improving
production as well as being the source
of insecticides. Many flowering plants
rely on animals to help them mate by
ensuring fertilization. Microbes and
animal supply soil with adequate
nutrients for plants.
